During Chinese New Year holiday, I decided to try Maccha House. I had noticed this new place for a while now. Since there was almost no lineup, it was the perfect time for lunch. My buddy and me were first led to a table on the side, then after 5 minutes the waitress asked us to move to another spot so that a family with a baby stroller could sit where we were. Well, it did not matter much - the spot was more comfortable. When I opened the menu, I was let down by Maccha House. The restaurant did
When I opened the menu, I was let down by Maccha House. The restaurant did not offer any green tea flavoured food. There were desserts with green tea such as pancakes and ice cream, but no main dish. The only available green tea items were drinks and desserts. I had expected that, but was still hoping to be wrong. Moving on.... We started by ordering drinks: 黑密牛奶抹茶 (Maccha Latte with Black Sugar - $34) and 忌廉牛奶抹茶 (Maccha Cream Latte - $34). For the main course, we chose one rice and one ramen: 咖喱牛肉丼 (Beef Curry - $49) and 芝士蕃茄拉麵 (Tomato Cheese Ramen - $74) to share.
The drinks arrived first. The Black Sugar Maccha Latte was a good choice. It tasted delicious. As for the other drink, we did not get the right one.
Instead of the Maccha Cream Latte, we were served 雪糕綠茶 (Green Tea Float - $29). The texture should have been thicker and smoother with a creamy flavour, but instead it was watery and had almost no sweet flavour at all. It was as though we were drinking green tea flavoured water with an ice cream. The Maccha Latte with Black Sugar in this case tasted 10 times better. We thought perhaps the waitress had heard us wrong and noted down the wrong drink, so we let it pass. As for the food, it was not bad. The dishes were nicely presented. The Beef Curry also had a salad on the side. It looked healthy and appetizing. There was enough salad sauce and curry sauce for the rice. Great! The vegetable soup on the other hand was only satisfactory. I guess it was a bit too simple. I mean it was not a "老火湯" (did not require many hours to cook), so it lacked some flavours to it. Now, about the Tomato Cheese Ramen. It was well displayed. By simply looking at the colours, sparkling red with a green salad on the side, one would fall in love with it. Too bad appearances often deceive. The cheese was slightly burnt on top and gave off a bitter taste. There was also too much cheese. It was dominating the whole dish, leaving no place for the tomato to show its quality. When it came for the bill, we realized that the waitress did not take the wrong order for the Maccha drink. It was the bar's mistake. Purely for principles, we asked a staff to rectify our bill. We were not ready to pay $34 for a mistake Maccha House made. I think this restaurant would serve as a nice tea place/coffee shop with drinks, cakes, biscuits and desserts.
