This was my third visit to Yardbird, and there was still much to love about this place. This time, I went on a Tuesday night at 7:30 as a group of 3, and didn't have to wait at all. This was my third visit to Yardbird, and there was still much to love about this place. This time, I went on a Tuesday night at 7:30 as a group of 3, and didn't have to wait at all. Actually I've never had to wait as I went on Thursday at 9 one time and got take out the other. Here's the rundown:

Food:

Firstly, as most people have mentioned, Yardbird is slightly pricey for what it is. However, that can easily be counteracted by ordering the non-yakitori items. I also feel that actually, the non-yakitori items are better and more unique anyway (except for the meatball that is, which will always have a special place in my heart!) Our bill came to $211 per head for the items below and we were so full, we couldn't finish the food. The first time I came and had Yakitori, I paid $400+, so you can really see the difference.

Mochi- Ordered this every time I came here, and it really has become one of my greatest cravings! Crispy seaweed, fragrant sesame and a delectable sweet soy sauce coat this crunchy-on-the-outside-chewy-on-the-inside morsel of delight. Grade: A

KFC- Also a must order for my 3 visits so far - This is cauliflower coated in a light batter with a sweet and spicy sauce, fried, and sprinkled with sesame. Again, it's that delicious crispiness without the hard deep fried feeling that attracts me to this dish. The light spice adds some excitement but is not too much for me to take (I like, but cannot take much spice). I do however feel that this dish has gone slightly downhill across my last three visits - it's not as crispy anymore! Still a good dish - Grade: B+/A-

Meatball- Again, one of my staples at this restaurant (heck, I could order this and the above two every time and be happy). For me, it's not the meatball itself, it's the eggyolk sauce that does it. I keep the sauce for dipping other things. They did try to take my sauce away a couple times, but no! It is MINE! Grade: B+/A-

Chicken and Egg - This dish is like a non-crispy bibimbab or a risotto with raw egg, peas, and chicken skin. It tastes amazing! Grade: A-

Chicken Oyster - This was my first time trying this dish, and while it was well done, it didn't knock my socks off. For 42 bucks, it's probably better to stick to the non-yakitori which are more special and filling. Grade: B

Fried Chicken with Kewpie Mayo - This was appealing because I love anything with Kewpie, but folks, bear in mind that you can buy Kewpie at almost any supermarket. The chicken itself was just ok - a bit overfried and the skin was not softy crispy like normal karaage. I think you can get better chicken karaage elsewhere or made at home. Still yummy, but not worth the price or stomach space. Grade: B-

Service:Door lady was very friendly and recognises return customers (even though my last visit was a couple months ago). Waiters were nice and remind me of the waiters in the states who like to have a chat and get friendly instead of just writing down your order. They add personality to the place. They should probably stop trying to take the sauces away though.

Decor:I loved the big retro window of this building. Decor looks clean and fresh, but also probably contributes to the noise problem - everything is hard hard hard and echoes the jarring music. I would not say the chairs were particularly comfy.

Some points for improvement:

Do a lunch session! - I had this conversation with the owner before already, and he said that they already work very long hours preparing for the dinner session. However, as they are so good and close to Central, it would be a shame not to ride the hype to the max and do some lunch! It could even just be a takeaway shop or something, but I think it would be super popular! Their food is served in small portions and perfect for a light lunch, or a few more orders for a full stomach.

Music is good but way too loud - We asked about three times to have the music turned down, and I think the request was complied with, but somehow at the end of the night the music either got louder again, or was just too loud in the first place. I honestly had a headache by the end, and it just wasn't good for conversation at all. I'm not asking for inaudible Mozart; just don't turn the restaurant into a club.
