We were keen on a feed but wasn't keen on staying in the Tung Chung air conditioned malls for a feed, so we gave Indian food a try. This is not the first time we have tried Indian food; however the last decent Indian joint we ate out at was on the other side of the world and served southern Indian cuisine. This joint serves northern Indian cuisine, which is more or less a different style of Indian cuisine - imagine the difference between Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine, for example. Anyway, we cau
This is not the first time we have tried Indian food; however the last decent Indian joint we ate out at was on the other side of the world and served southern Indian cuisine. Anyway, we caught a complimentary ride in to the restaurant from Tung Chung MTR station. The journey took 5-7 minutes at the back of a 7-seater Chariot, and when we entered the restaurant, we knew we were in the right place. Some people complain about the smell in the restaurant; I don't mind the smell (even though it gets onto my clothes) and happily take it in as part of the atmosphere.
We ordered a few things: Fried squid (he wanted it), Curry potatoes and green peas, Lamb rogan josh, Butter roti, Garlic naan, Special rose water for him and mango lassi for me. The staff (male, Indian, spoke good Cantonese) recommended lamb rogan josh - we happily took his advice on board.
We were served with three sauces soon after we ordered. I asked another staff (male, in a turban, spoke only English) what the sauces were about. He said that they consisted of mint sauce, pickled lemons and tamarind chutney. We scooped little drops onto our spoons and tried them one by one. The mint sauce was nice and mild and went well with the curry (to lessen the effect of the spice, I'd imagine); the tamarind chutney had a very strong sugary kick in it; (same as above) the picked lemons were bitter and sour - not really my cup of tea.
Fried squid - Forgettable. Eight pieces for $45. If you like the dry nature of fried squid at Chinese restaurants, this wouldn't be your pick. The batter is rather thick but not bad.
Curry spuds and green peas - A nice, filling dish. You don't need to order rice with this. Nothing special about it though.
Lamb rogan josh - A bit more spicy than the other curry we ordered, and full of flavour. An Indian stand up comedian joked that if you want a decent curry at a curry joint, you should order rogan josh. I had his comments in mind as the staff recommended rogan josh to us; both the stand up comedian's comments and the staff's recommendation did not disappoint.
Butter roti - A bit disappointing on my part. Ordinary, to say the least, and a bit small in size. I guess that's because I've had better roti in Hong Kong.
Garlic naan - Much better than the roti. A subtle garlic smell throughout the feed, and a hearty portion too.
Rose water - Not bad. A very fresh, crisp flavour. It looks like diluted Ribena though, fortunately it doesn't taste like it.
Mango lassi - A bit on the ordinary side, compared with the rose water. More or less something like the mango frappes you can buy from chain coffee stores, less the icy chunks. Maybe it's because the frappes are make like the lassi...
We got a ride back out to Tung Chung, filled and ready to tackle the shopping mall for the afternoon. A very nice lunch - would love to come back here again.
