Intrigued by NOM's meatball menu, we wanted to check it out for a light dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant was decked out in wood, giving it a casual and earthy vibe. We had a drink at the bar whilst waiting for our friends to arrive before adjourning to dinner. My NOM-groni was delicious and POTENT.For dinner, we ordered a selection of dishes to share. Intrigued by NOM's meatball menu, we wanted to check it out for a light dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant was decked out in wood, giving it a casual and earthy vibe. We had a drink at the bar whilst waiting for our friends to arrive before adjourning to dinner. My NOM-groni was delicious and POTENT.

For dinner, we ordered a selection of dishes to share. NOM's menu has meatballs, a selection of ala carte items, and pizza. Being our first time here, we didn't know what the portion sizes were like, and under-ordered. The wait staff were still pretty green and gave us poor indications of what the sizes would be - "Uh, not large, but not small" Me: ???

Anyway, meatballs come in threes, while the ala carte items are tapas/starter portions. We didn't order pizza.

Wonderful gamut of textures and the cheese imparting an earthy saltiness to the mix. This which was meant to be a side. But we had it on the table for ages before the next item arrived, so had it as a starter. 

Hokkaido scallops with burnt eggplant, pancetta, cauliflower and black ink (HK$168)

The scallops were sweet and fresh and paired well with pancetta as it normally does, but rather on the small side. The raw cauliflower were very prettily cut but didn't do much for the dish.

I was pleasantly surprised as I thought this would be more of a tomato salad, but turned out to be more of a prawn dish. This had light, summery flavours, which was great as a refreshing starter. By now I realised there wasn't going to be a distinction between starters and mains, so I was glad that some thought had been given to the order of our dishes. (I think.)

King crab (meatballs), zucchini fries, coffee mayo (HK$98)

These were chockful of crab, and encased in a light, breaded shell. They were really crabcakes in another form. The coffee mayo was interesting but I wasn't sure it complemented the crab all that well. The zucchini fries were a tad soggy and bland. But the balls, wow. 

Beef meatballs with neapolitan ragout, paccheri pasta and ricotta cheese (HK$78)

Amaze-balls. Loved the richness of the beef meatballs and the classic combination of tomato and cheese. Like how mama used to make them (if I had an Italian mama.)

Chicken breast, bacon, harissa, goat cheese, celery puree (HK$188)

Underwhelmed. The chicken, for some reason, tasted floury. 

Our table of 4 still craved more after the first round of orders, so we ordered two more items:

Slow-cooked iberico lamb with pumpkin puree, celery leaves and potato chips

I don't like lamb in general, but this was succulent without being gamey. The sweetness of the pumpkin puree complemented the meat very well. 

Grilled tiger prawns

These were an off the menu item which we hassled the owner for ;) They were very fresh, and grilled just right with minimal seasoning. 

Apparently if you called ahead and asked what they had in the fridge that day, they could do off the menu specials for you. The table next to us had a pre-ordered bistecca, which looked wonderful. 

I really enjoyed the meatballs and would return to try more of those. The cocktail list here is pretty interesting and extensive too, so I can see myself coming in to the bar for casual bites and a good tipple. Hopefully by then they'd have ironed out the teething problems with service. the owner, Ricky, is really friendly and good with recommendations though!
