My friend and I were in Lan Kwai Fong on Christmas Eve, but the streets in LKF were packed with people like sardines in a can. We were stuck and could not longer stand it (literally), and we finally managed to get out of the crowd to find somewhere for a drink and chat. We made our way to the relatively quiter Soho and settled down in Portobello, as I'd long been fascinated by the very English-styled interiors. It was well past midnight (so it was Christmas Day already!) and the place was still
It was well past midnight (so it was Christmas Day already!) and the place was still full, luckily there were still a couple of seats at the very back of the cafe, it was really dark so please bear with the poor quality of the photos . Christmas wouldn't be complete without a glass of mulled wine - which was on offer here and other Staunton's Group outlets during the festival - but since I still had to work later on Christmas Day (what a turn-off ) so alcohol was out.
Instead I found comfort with Portobello's Scone Set ($78) which included 2 scones served with clotted (Devonshire I think) cream and jam complete with a pot of Taylors of Harrogate tea. Didn't remember which tea I chose or whether it had been set by Portobello already, presumably it was some "regular" tea but anyway it came with a decent set of teaware. The tea itself was...well...sort of bland, to my surprise.
The scones were better, warm and crumbly, and were a best match with the luscious cool clotted cream. I even scooped the cream and ate it as if it were ice cream! So never mind the pre-packed jam...
Of course I couldn't finish all 2 scones late at night, so I asked the staff to pack it for me to take home for breakfast (although now it was rightfully breakfast time strictly speaking).
My friend ordered a Peach Paradise ($38) which was essentially peach-flavoured soda, and a Tiramisu ($48). I tried a bit of the Tiramisu, it was not bad, at least the mascarpone layer was smooth and creamy and the lady finger layer was adequately immersed in coffee. Just that I thought there were better choices in an English tea house. Anyway. Oh by the way the restrooms were just across us, one was labelled "Stand" and the other "Sit", so if you have to go make sure you're going to the right one!
We had a pleasant time - despite the fact that when it was full Portobello could be quite noisy and we had to raise our voices to talk - till the staff told everyone that it was closing time - time to go and enjoy the chilly breeze out there again.
