Following the recommendation and feature on TVB's 食得峰騷 last week, I ventured out to Jordan in the hope for "authentic pho" as promised by Master蘇. I arrived just after 1600 hoping to avoid the crowds...first mistake, they have a recess between 1600-1800 so plan your arrival time! I came back at 1750, by this time a long line had been formed already by other punters attracted by the show. For this visit i tried the signature dishes: Combination Beef Pho (火車頭), Crab Paste Vermicelli (蟹膏檬), and Shrimp Cake (蝦餅):
PHO - this is the yardstick for any self-proclaimed authentic Viet shop, and im sorry to report that this place already falls short at this elementary hurdle. The soup is flavourless, the ingredients incomplete (missing vital ingredients were brisket 牛腩片and tripe 牛拍葉), and the accompanying red chilli did not deliver any "punch". Very disappointing! Serving size is reasonably large, but unfortunately the quality is not there for interest to carry through to the end of the bowl. Those looking for authentic Pho should look elsewhere.
Crab Vermicelli - not readily available elsewhere so this is a unique dish in HK. Flavour of the soup quite good, lots of rich crab paste taste in a tomato based soup. The 檬noodles were OK but probably a standard pho type noodle would be better utilisation of the taste as it would better absorb the flavour of the soup which is the real highlight of this dish. A little over the top with the bean sprouts though which slightly spoiled the overall experience.
Shrimp Cake - quite good as a side dish, freshly hand-made onsite and the freshness can be easily tasted. Texture is tender and soft matched with a lightly crisped fried coating.
Seating - Very crowded and not too comfortable to sit in....prepare to be cosy with the punters next door!
