Brother likes their food (in general - not just their steaks even though he is usually a strict carnivore) and wanted to pay a visit, so the 4 of us came here on a weeknight - business is pretty good given it was a wednesday night - we booked a table in advance but tables around us were soon filled about 30 mins after we came in.
Menu is pretty limited - most people order sets which really are good deals, especially the escargot set ($148) which everyone except me ordered (I ordered a main course and an appetizer) otherwise the a la carte menu has appetizers like salads and main courses. the escargot set comprises of the following:
soup: choice of cream of mushroom or borscht soup
I always like their borscht soup. it's quite hearty too, even with the absence of chunks of meat - I like their vegeable assortment at the bottom of the bowl. both soups taste superb with the bread that they provide - my personal favorite bread of theirs is the sweet bun - soft with a subtle buttery taste with an egg white wash top - they always come out nicely golden brown and warm.
6 escargots baked with mashed potatoes
baked in garlic butter and some unidentifiable herbs, very flavorful. especially like the semi-crust that forms in the tops of the mashed potatoes which is quite creamy, relatively smooth and not grainy.
main course of your choice: fillet of sole OR sirloin steak OR baked chicken cheese spaghetti OR some other choice that I forgot
sorry, cannot comment as these are not what I ordered but you can judge yourself from the pictures (or maybe not) but mom, dad and bro were all satisfied. The baked chicken spaghetti smelled nicely cheesy and I saw bits of bacon in it as well. Portion sizes are quite generous too. the sauce on the steak looked garlicky and of right consistency. Sole fillet looked quite promisingly pan-fried.
for my separate orders (since I did not order a set) I had
stir-fried scallops with vegetables ($135)
scallops are plump and very fresh, vegetables were...well, vegetables. interestingly bok choy was served with broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and bell peppers. however I found the whole dish a bit too garlicky - I am usually a big fan of garlic; I admit I sometimes eat raw cloves. but this dish had too much garlic and tasted slightly overly salty.
Caesar salad ($68 or $78 or $98, I forgot)
fresh lettuce, dressing was obviously store-bought but that's ok. just so-so, nothing special.
quality is generally good, but the environment is not too comfortable - it is very dimly lit and is quite cramped, but it does have an unusual sense of homeliness to it. or maybe it's the age of the servers that make you feel more "at home".
service is so-so - while they are attentive (fast water-refill rate, which is a rarity) they don't seem too friendly (no reply after several "thank yous")
a good experience, but will only come again if someone else insisted.
