I have heard so many good things about this restaurant, so I went there with my friend for the first time last night.
I know that the lunch deal is very reasonable, but for dinner, it is very expensive.
The food was ok. We didn't order the $500 chef's special sushi set because there were some sushi that I didn't eat, but the chef refused to change them into something else. Normally for that kind of price, other restaurant will give us a bit leeway. I have asked to replace uni and shellfish with plain fish sushi (not like I was asking for toro or what), but they still refused to replace it, ok, whatever.
We just ordered a-la-carte and had:
- 6 pieces of salmon sushi (ok)
- 2 pieces of tuna sushi (very good)
- 4 pieces of hamachi (ok)
- 1 steamed egg custard (ok on the surface but all watery inside)
- 1 deep fried chicken skin (bad)
- 4 tempura prawns (not good. It was not hot at all)
- one terryaki beef (not a set - below avg)
- one toro bowl with rice & green onions (nice, but dont think they used the nice japanese onions at all)
- one beer
To be honest, the food quality was decent. It's however not to the point that I think justifies that kind of price. Apart from the chopped toro bowl that I had, the rest that we ordered were not expensive dishes.
The service was BAD. We set at the table and didn't get much service at all. The waitresses & waiter (not one, but three) didn't seem to know what they have on their menu and couldn't even answer most of my questions. I ask them questions about the price of the dish and what's in it, they had to go back and ask the chef. They ended up going back and forth for a few times. I can't say they were impolite, but they were not very warm or welcoming. Maybe because we are not familiar faces? I had problem even getting my tea refilled throughout the dinner.
Evne though the food quality is ok, I will not go there again for that kind of service and decoration. I have had many good sushi before for a lesser price. I expect, at least, better service for the price that we paid.
I'll definitely choose Rokkaku or even Kiku over this restaurant whether for the service, ambiance or food quality.
