I love a good plate of charsiu egg with rice. A total comfort food that is easily made at home but I always love ordering it if it I see it on the menu. 旺記冰室 (English name: Mon Kee Cafe) was one of many cha chan tengs that were mentioned among foodies as a really good place for this. It had been open for a while with several locations across Hong Kong. We were greeted by an adorable monkey holding their signature dish. Menu is in English and Chinese and has all photos of all their food. I had the double whammy. BBQ Pork and Shrimp with Eggs on Rice with Homemade Sweet Soy Sauce ($64). The egg was really soft and there was a generous amount of sauce that was very definitely on the sweet side. The only thing is the char siu was a bit dry. The shrimp was fresh but they only gave me three. A bit stingy I think. But it was the char siu that really disappointed me. Boyfriend decided to have the Homemade Tomato Pepper Sauce with Pan Fried Pork Chop, Chicken and Rice ($70) and added $10 for scrambled egg. The sauce had a bit of spice to it so it wasn't just a basic tomato sauce. There was also plenty of it. The pork chop was well fried and crisp. The chicken was moist and tender with crispy skin. This fared better than mine.
Portion was not very big and I was able to finish. But for their signature dish that many say was one of the best in town, I wasn't too impressed. I've had better. Probably won't be back.
