I've taken visitors here a few times to try their famous shrimp wontons but found recently that their prices have increased into the unreasonable territory. When a small bowl of wonton noodles with 4 tiny wontons costs HKD 30, no wonder the locals no longer eat there. At the current prices, probably only Japanese tourists will find it reasonable! While the wontons were delicate and pretty tasty, I cannot justify paying the price of a full meal at Cafe de Coral for the snack-sized portion. While the wontons were delicate and pretty tasty, I cannot justify paying the price of a full meal at Cafe de Coral for the snack-sized portion. Also, the wonton soup is ridiculously salty.
The most ridiculously priced item is the Beijing-style dry noodles, which cost HKD 40 for a very small plate of noodles with a few strips of beef and some sauce. Definitely avoid getting it!
Also, when I was paying, the cashier gave me a 50c instead of a $1 coin. It wasn't until I pointed out the difference in Cantonese that she gave me the correct change. It was only 50c but seemed to be intentional because an experienced cashier would make that kind of mistake and nothing on the menu is priced in 50c.
If you want wonton noodles in Central, I'd suggest trying Tsim Chai Kee across the street, which is only half the price and just as tasty.
