this has got to be one of the MOST OVERRATED restaurants i have been in a long while... as a big time foodie from singapore, i have been spending months trying to find a place that servces good laksa and chicken rice, and i believe i have found one that really reminds me most of home - 海南少爺 in causeway bay, when i went last week.. however, a friend was telling me about this restaurant 文華雞飯, saying that the owner claims to serve MUCH BETTER singaporean cuisine (esp chicken rice) than 海南少爺 (which

this has got to be one of the MOST OVERRATED restaurants i have been in a long while... as a big time foodie from singapore, i have been spending months trying to find a place that servces good laksa and chicken rice, and i believe i have found one that really reminds me most of home - 海南少爺 in causeway bay, when i went last week.. however, a friend was telling me about this restaurant 文華雞飯, saying that the owner claims to serve MUCH BETTER singaporean cuisine (esp chicken rice) than 海南少爺 (which can be seen as they even have a huge billboard outside the restaurant saying "文華雞飯>海南少爺). after hearing this VERY BOLD STATEMENT, i told myself ive got to try it myself before believing so..

so i decided to go with a buddy of mine on weds evening, as we got there at 8, we waited for around 10 minutes before we got seated. what we didn't understand that while we we being seated, we saw MANY EMPTY SEATS at the very end of the restaurant.. and those seats weren't even being reserved!! i mean if the owner believes the restaurant cannot handle that many customers at the same time, they could at least offer the customers waiting in line to have a seat as opposed to having to wait outside standing under the heat.

so on to the food, we were IN SHOCKED when the waiter came back 15 minutes AFTER WE PLACED OUR ORDERS, only to tell us that ALL black chicken AND laksas have been sold out (we ordered one of each)... i mean is there 0 communication between the kitchen and the waitstaff? i mean if you're out of a certain item, why not tell us beforehand, but instead 15 minutes AFTER we placed our order (and it was only 8pm)?? we were not the only people complaining as other customers seemed very dissatisfied... anyway we decided to opt for the regular white chicken rice instead... when the chicken rice came, we were TERRIFIED as the rice was SUPER OILY, while the chicken had MORE FAT/SKIN than meat... we told ourselves maybe itd taste good, as i hate judging a book by its cover, but IM SORRY TO SAY IT DID NOT TASTE GOOD.. chicken i expected it to not have much flavor (as it is impossible to have chicken with a lot of flavor if they are chilled from china, which i understand), but i expected it to be very tender and soft... but to my surprise, the chicken was REALLY ROUGH, and there were chunks of fat sticked to the chicken... the rice was almost INEDIBLE, as it was SUPER OILY and WET... after having just a few bites, we decided to ask for the bill as we couldnt simply stand the food here... we ended up eating wonton noodles at a store a couple minutes down the block...

i mean i understand the owner wants to make a statement by saying his restaurant serves better chicken rice than the very popular 海南少爺. but to me (and to the many posters who posted before me), this is not the case... i mean my advice to the owner is to not bite more than you can chew... maybe the owner just doesnt know how to manage a restaurant? one has to understand being able to cook does not neccessarily mean u can be a successful restaurteur. and is it really neccessary for the owner to post a giant billboard claiming his restaurant is better than 海南少爺? because to me, it is not.. i can even just find a random chicken rice restaurant on the street and have a better meal... not only was service terrible, the food itself is INEDIBLE... i had high expectations for a restaurant making such a bold statement, but it totally failed me and theres no returning to 文華雞飯 for me...
