We went to Fat Angelo's for the Executive Set Lunch and got something that the tea boy would have thought twice about. The first impression of Fat Angelo's is that it could be any cheap place in New Jersey. It was cavernous and decorated with photocopied old photographs. Ambience aside, we were seated and the waitress was initially quite attentive. We ordered the set lunch and the food began to flow. First came the hot water and lemon we asked for. It tasted 'chemically' but was drinkable.

First came the hot water and lemon we asked for. It tasted 'chemically' but was drinkable. The drinks were quickly followed by the minestrone soup, 'home-made' bread and 'Italian' salad. The soup was fine - nothing special, but not bad. The bread was home-made in the sense that it was made somewhere, perhaps a home, but not in the restaurant. Basically it was two dry old white bread rolls that you would get in a supermarket and are produced in large factory batches. Inedible. The salad was lettuce, raw red onion, olives and tomatoes. We didn't quite get the 'Italian' angle. Perhaps the dressing was Italian-style, but as it was so insipid and watery, it was hard to tell.
The mains we ordered came next. The ribs were not tender in any way and I immediately realized they tasted like the pre-cooked and then microwave reheated ones that used to come out of a kitchen at a place I worked as a teenager. They had a tough texture and little flavour. The accompanying corn on the cob tasted of pure margerine and remained almost intact on my plate. The lasgne was wrong on many levels. The layers were very flat and the sauces (tomato and bechamel) were poured on top rather than being incorporated into the baked pasta. Odd, but upon closer insection, we also realized that the meat was not minced, but had more of a paste-like texture. It looked and tasted like corned beef out of a can, rather than ground beef. Needless to say - mightily disappointing.
Throughout this time, all of the wait staff disappeared and we had to tell them to take away our plates - they were very polite and friendly, but elusive. The restaurant had only about four tables at the this point.
Our 'gelato' came out eventually and, despite it being ice cream rather than Italian gelato, was by far the best thing we ate. I guess that, as it was made by somebody else, it was better quality. It wasn't the best or most exciting ice cream we've eaten, but it was acceptable.
Fat Angelo's failed on so many levels. I guess they try to provide cheap food in large portions and the quality suffers due to that business model. We will certainly not be returning.
