So when I first heard about Hong Kong opening a shop which sells the double plagiarised version of the 'pon-de-ring' doughnut, I was keen to try one! I mention 'plagiarised' because Pon De Ring was invented by Japan's Mister Donut, now symbolised as a cartoonized Lion when creative marketeers thought that a 'donut pon-de-ring' is very much like a lion's mane - little wonder Japan is the world's no.1 leader in Manga and Animes, kudos to their imagination! Mister Donut the Original, in turn, came from America in the first place, unknown to many people who believe it comes from Japan. One also couldn't help but wonder if this french cruller lookalike donut was all along, a word play on the word 'pondering'.... Yet alternative sources say it originates from Brazil. To me, it all adds to the confusion and is classified under the 'WTF is happening' category personally - there simply isn't an astute answer.


Now that we got the history part sorted and due credit was given to the inventor, knowing that this shop blatantly ripped off the signature donut from the now Japanese owned & operated Mister Donut, rather than the separate American entity - how's the main character in the story, the Donut?

Rice Bubbles 'Pon de Ring' with Chocolate:
This is actually not bad. Mine wasn't as oily as others below have mentioned. It was chocolatey, as well as having a slightly 'runny' centre. I like the QQ口感 (Taiwanese for the chewiness) but is it as good as the Japanese version? Quite honestly, I don't see that much of a difference but I do remember the Japan one being a tad better in terms of being lightly fluffy yet chewy, rather than it being a bit dense like here.

I would eat it again but it won't entice me back unless I was really starving and having a sugar craving!




These days, Mongkok and especially Dundas Street (登打士街) is almost becoming a 2nd 西門町 in Taiwan, with its proliferation of Taiwanese snacks spanning from 萬家 pastries to bubble or tapioca teas to 麵線 and there's even fried chickens in the side branching streets! Princess Donut then is yet another Japanese/Taiwanese inspired shop.... apart from the Japanese Pon De Ring, it also sells the Taiwanese shaved ice that is annoyingly popping up every 2nd day at various parts of town. Seems like Hong Kong is fast losing its appeal and competitiveness in this field and clearly lacking originality. Japanese and Taiwanese imports have arrived like a swarm of locust - how many Hong Kong snack or food shop have we exported to Japan and Taiwan? Very few indeed. Our biggest export nowadays is probably 'Angelababy' - and she's not edible
