Summary: Oden, Ramen, Sake is their tagline, and yes, they live up to that. The rest of the food is good not great though, and is about 25% too expensive. That said, i did enjoy the meal, and i think there's enough novelty and quality to warrant a try. Nojo is part of the hot H Code Japanese restaurant package that includes Nojo, Saketen, Yakiniku Great, and Birdie, and it's definitely cool. Giant terrace and shared seating inside makes for a lively atmosphere. Drinks menu is appealing, with many sakes on offer in tasting, carafe and bottle sizes, and the standard beer/cocktails. It's called a ramen tavern, but ramen is only 1 menu page of 6, along with fried items, drinking snacks, a whole page of my beloved oden, grilled stuff, sashimi and salads. There's a lot on offer here, and we tried to take a survey, with mixed results.
Here's what we tried:
Smoked Salmon and Salmon Roe Potato Salad
Mixed Oden:
It's pretty good oden, and gosh i'm just happy there's finally oden in HK. I'm just not sure it's worth HKD 118. The tofu and daikon are truly standard, while the egg omelette and tofu skin roll are tasty not thrilling. The chicken wings were not successful at all, tasting like an over-boiled cart-noodle topping. A la carte, each piece is like $48, which is nuts - in japan that would get you a whole bowl of the stuff (i know we're not in japan). Oden is supposed to be comfort food, perfect for cold days, late nights or drinking. Making it a fancy dish seems like it's missing the point. Worth trying if you're craving oden, but otherwise don't bother. Hurts me to say.
Overnight sake lees, soy and ginger marinated fried chicken
Bagna Cauda in Miso
Pork and Zucchini Roll
Minced Market Fish with Green Chili
Spicy Minced Chicken Topped Noodle
Overall, it was an enjoyable meal. I love that there's enough variety in the menu for Nojo to actually be a "ramen tavern." The food is good, and though there are some meh dishes, you can see the effort they put into making it an interesting meal. Further, there aren't many (any?) places in town that have that combination of solid oden, ramen and sake, as well as a host of other small plates that keep a night going. That said, i think the pricing is a bit heavy; we paid over 750 for the two of us, with just one whiskey highball. With 1-2 drinks each, you're looking at 450 each or so. I can't give Nojo a strong Good recommendation, but it's definitely better than OK. If you're looking for a ramen++ meal, this might scratch that itch.
