Nojo is part of the  hot H Code Japanese restaurant package that includes Nojo, Saketen, Yakiniku Great, and Birdie, and it's definitely cool. Giant terrace and shared seating inside makes for a lively atmosphere. Drinks menu is appealing, with many sakes on offer in tasting, carafe and bottle sizes, and the standard beer/cocktails. It's called a ramen tavern, but ramen is only 1 menu page of 6, along with fried items, drinking snacks, a whole page of my beloved oden, grilled stuff, sashimi and salads. There's a lot on offer here, and we tried to take a survey, with mixed results.

Here's what we tried:
Smoked Salmon and Salmon Roe Potato Salad

The only real flub of the night - it's a Nojo-marked specialty, but it was dreadful. The overly-portioned cheap smoked salmon gives the whole dish a heavy-handed saltiness, which would throw off even the best potato salad. Sadly this isn't the best potato salad, itself being too salty, as well as in dire need of pepper and some acidity, like rice vinegar. They do a nice job keeping the slightly chunky, starchy texture of the potatoes (hoku hoku), and I realize that to match the salmon they need to keep the potato salad relatively simple, i.e. no other major ingredients. That said, it's missing variety of texture and crunch, and it suffers from the lack of cucumbers or carrots. Just a salty, boring mess. Don't order this as it is now.

For 118 you get Egg Omelette, Tofu, Daikon Radish, Chicken Wings, Tofu Skin Roll with Chicken
It's pretty good oden, and gosh i'm just happy there's finally oden in HK. I'm just not sure it's worth HKD 118. The tofu and daikon are truly standard, while the egg omelette and tofu skin roll are tasty not thrilling. The chicken wings were not successful at all, tasting like an over-boiled cart-noodle topping. A la carte, each piece is like $48, which is nuts - in japan that would get you a whole bowl of the stuff (i know we're not in japan). Oden is supposed to be comfort food, perfect for cold days, late nights or drinking. Making it a fancy dish seems like it's missing the point. Worth trying if you're craving oden, but otherwise don't bother. Hurts me to say.

Overnight sake lees, soy and ginger marinated fried chicken

My first thought was that it was just fried chicken, you don't get a lot of soy/ginger - however, after chewing, that sake effect comes through at the end.  While I'm not sure sake lees and fried chicken really match,  the chicken was nicely fried and very juicy. Always worth ordering.

Kind of a creamy miso dip with raw vegetables. Not essential but the vegetables were super-fresh, and the combination is pretty tasty

Pork and Zucchini Roll

The paper-thin pork was wonderfully crunchy and seasoned perfectly, and while the traditional Sliced Pork+Veggie combination is with asparagus, i think zucchini works even better. Cooked until slightly tender, while retaining some bite. Very nicely done.

Minced Market Fish with Green Chili

Basically the junk parts of various sashimi diced up and made into tartar with some green chili. The spice elevates it over the standard tuna tartar you've seen a million times, but it's still not the most exciting. Was a nice change from all the heavy cooked stuff though.

Spicy Minced Chicken Topped Noodle

It's basically a fancy dan dan mian. You add however much chili oil you want to the dish and mix it all up. It's not a cold dish as the noodles are served (after tossing in some light sauce), right out of the boiling water, but it's a dry ramen dish. I liked it more than my friend did, the chewiness of the thick al dente ramen really works with the spicy and savory sauce; it really does taste a lot like DDM. It gets better as you get to the bottom, where all the mixed ingredients get deposited. That said, for HKD 123, it's painfully overpriced, and i'm not sure i'd order it again.

Overall, it was an enjoyable meal. I love that there's enough variety in the menu for Nojo to actually be a "ramen tavern." The food is good, and though there are some meh dishes, you can see the effort they put into making it an interesting meal. Further, there aren't many (any?) places in town that have that combination of solid oden, ramen and sake, as well as a host of other small plates that keep a night going. That said, i think the pricing is a bit heavy; we paid over 750 for the two of us, with just one whiskey highball. With 1-2 drinks each, you're looking at 450 each or so. I can't give Nojo a strong Good recommendation, but it's definitely better than OK. If you're looking for a ramen++ meal, this might scratch that itch.
