When we rode the ferry across the harbor back to Hong Kong Island, we joined in the excitement of trying the new Italian gelato shop GROM at IFC. We sampled 2 Small Cups with 2 flavors each, one solely gelato and one sorbet to find out how special their purportedly all-natural ingredients and creamy gelato would be. For gelato, we had their Specials: Flavor of the Month Marron Glacè (Candied Chestnut) and Tiramisù; as for sorbet, Limone (Lemon) and Pera (Pear).Flavors and Taste:Marron Glacè (Can
Flavors and Taste:
Marron Glacè (Candied Chestnut)—it was milky with candied chestnut bits. It had a unique flavor but subtle.
Tiramisù—the coffee aroma with tiny biscuit cubes dominated the taste. The mixture wasn’t memorable as it missed the essence of the dessert's character of rich cheese, chocolate, or liqueur.
The two sorbets we tried on the other hand were better.
Lemon—it was thirst quenching and the taste was refined and refreshing.
Pear—it was aromatic and flowery. It tasted fresh and a bit grainy and chalky texture-wise.
Overall, the gelati were smooth and creamy but flavors weren’t distinctive enough. In terms of value, $59 for 2 scoops in a small cup was rather expensive especially when their cup’s bottom was deeply concave.
