This is one of my reviews on meals booked in the Restaurant Week event.
Torimen is a Japanese restaurant that serves ramen all day but only yakitori in the evening. Maybe that’s why they only offer dinner menu in the Restaurant Week. Charging at $438 per person, all the items in the dinner set are compulsory and they are available a la carte. Unless going by oneself, the Restaurant Week menu is less attractive and I would suggest ordering a la carte for more flexibility.
a) Smoked Salmon Caesar Salad – 7.5/10 It’s Ceasar salad with smoked salmon, period.
b) Red Wine Infused Duck Breast – 8.5/10 The piece of duck breast was seared at the outside leaving pinkish flesh, the best way of cooking to avoid rubbery meat. The red wine was very intense and matched well with the meat. One may get drunk with this dish if he/she has a shallow drinking capacity.
c) Grilled Oyster with Nori Risotto – 8/10 Bathed with cream and seasoning, the oyster was succulent. However, the nori flavour was not dominant.
d) Deep-fried Spicy Chicken – 8/10 Coated with wheat crumbs, the chicken cutlet was crunchy yet juicy inside. For the seasoning, I’s ready for stronger spice with its name.
e) Yakitori (to encore) – 8.5/10
The dinner menu covered 6 types of yakitori with meat, seafood and veggie, however, their qualities fluctuated much. The items listed below are those worth my repeated order. The kalbi (short beef ribs) was tender and well marinated. Unlike the common use of bacon, thin slices of pork were used to wrap the asparagus. A good choice as the pork was very thin and less salty, matched well with asparagus which was tender too. Don’t get fooled by these little finger-size Japanese mini sweet potatoes. They were naturally sweet and soft and who cares the calories!!
f) Yakitori (to order) – 8/10 The shitake mushroom was seasoned with pepper salt, soft and not too dry. The skin of the chicken wings was not crispy enough, but could maintain the moist in the flesh.
g) Yakitori (to avoid) – 6.5/10 The scallops were the worst among the yakitori shops I visited. Tasted like been processed with baking soda when the seafood was not fresh. The patch of black truffle paste couldn’t help much.
h) Torimen Ebi Ramen – 8.5/10 Although it’s a good design of half portion of ramen in the dinner menu, the ramen was so good that I wouldn’t mind sparing my capacity for a full portion. The soup base of this signature ramen was prepared with ebi (shrimp) essence and miso paste. Free from MSG but the shrimp flavour was very intense. A good round up of the dinner even dessert was not included.
