Hidden from the busier area of Mong Kok, China Cafe is a really traditional local cha chaan teng that preserves decoration from probably the 50s. Once I stepped inside the restaurant, I fell in love with the vibes. Not a tourist, all people are local, who probably live nearby. Most of them are middle aged, having a pineapple bun or toast with a cup of drink for afternoon tea, reading newspaper or chatting with their companions about daily life. Most of them are middle aged, having a pineapple bun or toast with a cup of drink for afternoon tea, reading newspaper or chatting with their companions about daily life. It really gave me a feeling that I traveled back in time when I used to have an afternoon tea with my grandma in a cha chaan teng like this when I was small.

The food was of good quality. For HKD$37, I got this massive fried chicken leg, thick cut fries and a cup of hot horlicks.

The chicken leg and fries were freshly fried upon ordering, that’s why I waited a bit for the food. But it’s worth the wait, as the freshly fried food was hot, yet not greasy at all. The fries were crunchy, and the chicken leg had a crispy skin, which wrapped tender chicken meat underneath.
The horlicks was so rich, it’s not like those made in chain restaurant. This one had got some undissolved bit in the bottom, which I like to eat it like candy.
The whole set was so enjoyable. I would definitely visit again for the food and vibes!
