Hotel Chocolat may have a strange name but mark my words, this brand is probably one of the best chocolatiers in Hong Kong right now.Originally from London, they are purveyors of luxury chocolates. They grow their own cocoa beans and use more chocolate in their products than any other ingredient. They have now expanded from shops only selling chocolates to cafes and yes, a hotel. Originally from London, they are purveyors of luxury chocolates. They grow their own cocoa beans and use more chocolate in their products than any other ingredient. They have now expanded from shops only selling chocolates to cafes and yes, a hotel. With that, they have also expanded their shops internationally. And that includes Hong Kong. Starting with one small kiosk in Causeway Bay Sogo and another branch in Kwun Tong's APM, they sell all sorts of chocolate sweets. You can purchase a gift set or if you only want a small bag, they have that, too with options to mix and match. I've tried a lot of them and let me tell you ... if you love chocolate with alcohol, theirs is extremely boozy and it's just infused with it! Personally, I think this place is far superior to Godiva and less people go to this one, too.
On this day, I decided to get something I hadn't seen before. Hot chocolate! What perfection on a cold evening at home. They had three varieties: milk, dark and salted caramel. Each cost $90. Now, the salted caramel caught my eye. It may be pause. My favorite sweets flavor is salted caramel! What would it taste like?
For $90, you get a 250 gram canister.
Opening it up, it looked like this. Small fine shreds of chocolate. I tasted it and yes, you do get a smooth taste of chocolate with a subtle hint of saltiness. But not too much to over power the chocolate taste.
I followed the instructions. I heated my milk, spooned in 6 teaspoons of chocolate. Stirred and reheated it again to melt. It did take a while to melt but it did. It wasn't thick like French hot chocolate but thin like American hot chocolate. But the taste was divine. A strong chocolate taste with a tiny hint of salt among the sweetness. It was perfect. A bit pricier than Swiss Miss (which I think is pretty fantastic store bought hot chocolate powder) but this is pretty good for a hot chocolate which needs a bit of time and patience. I would repurchase this if I wanted something more decadent.
