Stickhouse is one of these mass market produced gelato shops found in Italy. As mass market gelato is really not good at all, they came up with a plan to draw in the masses. They innovated it by putting it on a stick like a popsicle. Yup. Gelato on a stick. To make it even more appealing, you could choose a topping and a dip and they'll decorate it so it becomes one glorified mess of cold goodness on a hot sunny day.

Stickhouse has arrived in Hong Kong. I saw some blogs where they showed cute toppings where they made them look like everything from Christmas trees to the Minions. How cute is that? Captivated, I went.

Located in CitySuper's food court area, is this take away counter.

Menu was simple. You can choose the ones they have prepared to create your own.

I decided to create my own. I chose strawberrry cheesecake gelato ($32) with a milk chocolate dip ($5) and pistachio topping ($5).

My gelato on a stick was placed in a cardboard box that is exactly how they serve it in Italy.

The box states all the goodness of their product.

But here is where I was sadly disappointed. I know that Hong Kong is well ... overpriced and tend to really skimp on the ingredients, but this was really pretty disappointing. I had Stickhouse in Florence and it was layered with toppings and chocolate sauce and even chocolate swirls on top. The gelato was also thick and with all the toppings, it was one heavy stick and everything fell everywhere and was a general mess. But it was a lovely mess. Here? The width of the gelato was thin. The topping? It only was enough to stick to the dip and nothing more. Also, I was expecting a bit of "art" as that was what I paid for. Did I have to request it? I don't know. I wasn't told anything in forms of information. Aside from the skimping of the ingredients, the gelato was pretty good with a strong cheesecake flavor. It really did feel like I was biting into a frozen slice of cheesecake.

Something else I found annoying was the service. It wasn't helpful at all. I asked how it works and they just said "Look at the menu card." This is perhaps why I didn't know if I was to request art work on it or just a regular dip and topping. I wish this was better explained because when I returned from paying, my gelato was already finished without me seeing it or requesting for artwork. Also, I had no idea which stick was a regular gelato and which was a premium. I had to figure it out on my own after I realized that they had little colored stickers to indictate it. I think it would have been better if prices were clearly labelled. Also, there was no price listed for the premade versions for those that don't want to create it themselves. When asked, they didn't seem to know. I guess it was still new but staff seemed a bit uninformed on things. Perhaps these should also be labelled somewhere properly?

They really need a lot of work in forms of staff training. Perhaps next time I return, I won't order the dip and topping as there really weren't that many choices here to begin with.
