As far as Indian food goes, I have always considered this as a hidden gem after I set foot in this place more than 20 years ago. It has never failed me or failed to surprise me!There was this sudden urge of having Indian food before attending an evening event in Tsimshatsui. With me alone and no reservation, where would be a better place than Koh-i-Noor which is almost at the doorstep of the TST MTR station at K11? There was this sudden urge of having Indian food before attending an evening event in Tsimshatsui. With me alone and no reservation, where would be a better place than Koh-i-Noor which is almost at the doorstep of the TST MTR station at K11? So I decided to re-visit this joint after a long gap, too long as I soon found out!

This restaurant is not easy to find even though it can be seen from the street level as the entrance to the building is hidden between a couple of shops and the sign is actually inside at the little lift lobby.

As I arrived before the normal dinner time, the place was empty but I was made most welcomed by the staff in attendance, allowing me to choose a table of my preference. A quick glance around revealed that nothing much has changed, with the exception of having a large flat panel television on one of the walls. The menu was the same, nothing fancy, no half-hearted pseudo-Indian dishes with a touch of Thai or Malaysian ones thrown in just to get the patronage of the locals. A feeling of familiarity, a sense of going "home", a knowingness that despite everything that has happened in the area, the heart of this joint is still the same as the last time I visited.

I opted for my all-time favourite appetizer, Aloochaat, which is a spicy potato salad full of herbs and coriander - a perfect dish to whet the appetite! I have always had a soft spot for mutton, and that evening I decided to go for Mutton Masala, plus some Balsamic rice. The aloochat was simply divine while the mutton was tender, tasty and the sauce was simply out of this world! The long-grained rice was simply perfectly done, not quite enough to soak up the sauce though. Very satisfied and filled to the brim, I then finished off with a Masala tea.

Despite having tried a number of Indian restaurants on both sides of the harbour in recent years, this place remains my favourite. No pomposity, no loud Indian music, no starched table clothes, no fancy culinary utensils, no chatty waiters/waitresses ..... just plain old school Indian food. How could I have waited so long to re-visit Koh-i-Noor, I would never be able to answer that. One thing I knew as soon as I stepped out of the restaurant, I would be coming back for more, soon!
