I visited Sushi Yoshi in Wan Chai with 3 friends at lunchtime on Sunday. We hadn’t booked but the restaurant was empty when we arrived, and we were quickly seated (it was full by the time we left!). The restaurant is on a quiet side street and has a subtle exterior with a single sliding door and no windows to allow passers-by to peer in. The restaurant contains indoor table seating only and a simple, clean décor (including several thought-provoking Japanese antiques). The kitchen, chef and chill
The menu contained a large selection of Japanese cuisine. We took advantage of an extremely well-priced lunchtime menu. I had the Hokkaido Sashimi on Sushi Rice Bowl (see picture). We only had to wait a few minutes to be served.
We were given a salad, soup and a bowl containing a curious white jelly-like substance as a starter. The various flavours and texture were great (it’s the first time I’ve eaten a salad with chopsticks too). The food bowl contained a mix of fresh fish and rice and was presented as a patchwork of vibrant colours. I enjoyed all of this meal except the sea urchin (not the fault of the restaurant). It was a big bowl of food and represented great value. I drank several cups of Jasmine tea during my visit.
The restaurant was full by the time we left and contained a mix of families with young children and friends gathering to enjoy lunch. There was no background music or other distractions. I was able to talk with my friends without raising my voice.
The staff were extremely helpful and attentive. My glass was topped up with Jasmine tea as quickly as I could drink it. We stayed in the restaurant for almost 2 hours and at no time did we feel unwelcome or under pressure to leave.
I recommend visiting this restaurant. It’s extremely good value for Sashimi food and is only a short walk for exit A3 of Wan Chai MTR station.
