I was enjoying my family time at the West Kowloon promenade when we ran into a mass open-air yoga event, "Iris". I found that to be quite a sight to behold: An Indian yoga master "om"ing and "ha"ing over a public announcement system, hundreds of health conscious yogis sitting on their mats breathing in and out, and of course, eye catching "bikini-fit" practitioners (in their bikinis, of course.) It’s hard not to experience a mind, body and spiritual awakening under such circumstances.
The inspiration that my wife and my daughter got after seeing this awe-inspiring sight was to have a burger nearby. I obliged.
After a fairly long walk, we arrived at the “Chips Republic” next to the Grand Cinema. My wife comes here rather often. She thought the burgers there were good. She ordered their signature burger “MO”. I don’t eat beef so I had their Fish & Chips instead. After you place your order at the counter, you’ll receive a pager that informs you when your order is ready. You could then chillax at the comfortable sofas in the Republic. It’s spacious enough for strollers, which makes it child friendly. On the other hand, the free “HK Magazine” placed in the shop, with adverts for male and female strippers, advice for sex addicts and what not, was most certainly not child friendly. After a short wait, our meals were ready.
According to my wife, the burger was really good. The beef patty was juicy. The melted cheese mixed very well with other ingredients, lettuce, mushroom, caramelized onions and tomato. The French fries were just so-so but at least my daughter really enjoyed it. One first look at the Fish and Chips and I could sense trouble. The batter doesn’t look right at all. The “normal” batter usually had soda water or beer mixed into it to create a light and crispy texture. The batter used here was exactly the same as those used for onion rings, i.e. hard with breadcrumbs with hints of herbs. To be fair, the quality of the fish (I assume that it’s halibut or turbot) was good. It was fresh and succulent. The only problem I have with this dish is the batter.
The chips were not bad but not exceptional. It could have been more thickly cut. (Still my daughter enjoyed it nonetheless.) The tar tar sauce that came with it was good. A small pot of baked beans was also served, but I would have preferred mushy peas for the genuine fish & chips experience. So far the best fish & chips I’ve had is still at “The Chippy”. But after it folded, I am quite unable to find a really good alternative. I’ve tried those at Alfie’s, Jimmy’s Kitchen, Fish & Chicks and countless many others but I am still unable to find one that got everything right. The search continues…
On the other hand, the frozen yogurt with kiwis and strawberries was very good. The strawberries were very sweet. As you might have noticed, my daughter can’t keep her hand off the frozen yogurt even for a second for me to take a clean shot. All in all, stick to the burger and frozen yogurt. The Fish & Chips was not bad but I wouldn’t come here just for that.
Having said that, the Republic is a really comfortable place for chillaxing. No surprise that we saw quite a number of yogis entering the Republic for lunch. After all, what better way to end an intensely spiritual experience than to relax with burgers & desserts ?
