I've been in HK for over 8 years, and Chilli Fagara used to be my wife and my favorite restaurant. The food was great, and the service was decent. For anyone who has been in Hong Kong for a while, you get so much bad service thrown at you in good restaurant, that you don't really expect much. Serve me my food, don't bother me, and I'll give you full marks for service. I've been in HK for over 8 years, and Chilli Fagara used to be my wife and my favorite restaurant. The food was great, and the service was decent. For anyone who has been in Hong Kong for a while, you get so much bad service thrown at you in good restaurant, that you don't really expect much. Serve me my food, don't bother me, and I'll give you full marks for service. Expecting the waiter to recommend a dish or do any chit-chat is almost unheard of.
Anyway, the restaurant was our favorite over the years despite the fact that our dishes were thumped on our table like a slab of meat. However, in the last few years, especially since the change in location, the service has become outright rude and callous. And I loved the food so much that I came back three times in the last year, and I've left annoyed at the service each time.
Last night, I went to Chilli Fagara with my sister who had flown in from abroad and my parents and my children. My three year old boy needed to use so I took him to the little boys room. There are no locks to the main restroom, so while I was washing his hands, one of the staff pushed open the door with such force that my son, who was immediately behind it, fell down and was so shocked that he started crying. I think I heard a gruff "Sorry" muttered under his breath.
"Please be more careful", I said.
"Hey, I already said Sorry", came a gruff reply as he walked away. Well, he certainly didn't mean it, and didn't seem to care that the little boy was weeping on the floor. I guess I should assign this to one employee and not the restaurant, but it certainly left a bad taste in my mouth.
Our dinner reservation was from 18:15 till 20:30. At around 19:50, my wife asked the waiter for the menu because we wanted to order another dish.
"You cannot order anymore. You need to leave by 20:30" came the reply. He didn't say, "Here is the menu, but some dishes may take time and you may not have enough time to enjoy it before our next guests arrive at 20:30".
"But that's still another 40 minutes away and you haven't even asked what we wish to order" we complained.
He checked with his manager, then came back with a sulking face.
"Here's the menu, but you HAVE to leave by 20:30".
"Thanks - we are aware. And your rude reminders aren't appreciated".
He got the Chilli Prawns in 10 min, and we had left the restaurant by 20:15.
In my previous visit a few months ago, they had made a scene because one of the members of our group was pregnant and she requested them to skip the MSG.
I think there is a clear reason why this restaurant was a Michelin Star Restaurant between 2011-2013, and was later thrown off the list. It wasn't even in the recommended restaurant list for 2014 and 2015, and has now finally made the recommended list in 2016. I think I'll still end up eating the food here - but it's only going to be delivery and not dine-in going forward.
