Michelin award undoubtedly shed glamour and even crowned individuals and restaurants, but what makes one able to carry the legend forward and continue to impress customers by his true capability is the most important of all. Chef David Ibarboure, a michelin-starred chef from "BriKetenia" in France, brings his calibre to Hong Kong with practical yet delicate cuisines in French and Basque style. It is also helmed by the famous chef, Walter Lok, and it is my honour to try his masterpieces tonight.

It was quite a random restaurant search that I conducted for a friend's birthday dinner - was kind of struggling between MIC Kitchen and BriKetenia. Not by throwing a dice, just that my friend considered it more convenient to park inside this building. So here we go.

Visiting Kwun Tong for a meal isn't a strange thing lately, given the emergence of high-quality fine-dining eateries even inside the torn industrial buildings. A visit to BriKetenia doesn't cost you a journey in creepy lifts - it is simply a restaurant in the lower levels of a mall-cum-office building.

The restaurant is surprisingly big with a down-to-earth furnishing. Although "BriKetenia" means brickhouse in French, there is no brick element within sight. Cosy and adequately lit, it is able to convey a homey feeling after all.

As we came on a weekday night, it wasn't really full and we had the luck to occupy this spacious 5-seater table.

We were given two menus, one being the set dinner and another being the tasting menu ($598/head). We weren't feeling hungry enough to enjoy the long tasting menu, so the set dinner with 3 courses came into play. Ranging from $188 to $458 with options of extra charge for more expensive starters, set dinner of this pricing is satisfactory for a semi-formal dinner. There is credit card promotion which helps you save a bit.

It wasn't difficult at all to pick two main courses in our liking. To further enrich the content, we ordered two freshly shucked oysters as well.

Though these two were supposed to be prize-winning oysters, they weren't that plump and soft with mediocre freshness, probably attributing to the fact that it was a weekday night having lower turnover of stocks. It went smooth, but definitely didn't surprise us by its mild aftertaste.

Picking this bistro classic as one of the starters is a no-brainer in a restaurant helmed by a French chef. Topped with two slices of toast with molten cheese, it came in rich flavor of onion and slight highlight of cheese. The texture was watery but taste of onion was intense.

Adding $30 for this starter makes no regret, as this scrumptious starter was worth its value by the combination of complex flavour in just a spoonful of creme brulee. Inside the creamy egg custard, there laid goose liver pâté in the mix which was just right to permeat the decadent aroma in the custard without overpowering.

Another highlight was the raspberry jam and crunchy caramelized top which made it like a dessert but in fact a savory-cum-sweet starter. Further served with thin toast, the mixture melted in the mouth with a smooth finish.

One should expect a perfect dish of iberian pork chop with a charred brown crust and tender interior - it fulfilled 80% of my expection, that 20% missing was the fact that it was slightly overdone. Not really pink in the interior but with nice marbling, it tasted great but certainly had room to improve.

The charred crust with the moreish sauce had its marks gained despite the overdone interior. Mashed potatoes were creamy with a heavy buttery taste. 80/100 should be a just mark!

Linguine should be the best company of such a luscious lobster bisque - being smooth and at the same time al dente. Portion was alright, and definitely impressed us by its perfectly cooked state of lobster flesh and close-to-perfection linguine on all fronts.

Our dinner sets didn't come with dessert, but just by adding $50 for a dessert was worth going for, especially when it was my friend's birthday that I need such a plating for good photos! Servers here were smart enough for the birthday arrangement. I didn't even need to remind anything, but just to pretend normal to order a dessert and then it was served with such a plating!

Today's special was lemon tart with yogurt ice cream. Plating was thoughtful to place the candle at the far end so that the heat didn't disturb the state of yogurt ice cream.

Both lemon tart and ice cream in lime yogurt flavor performed well, which cleaned our palette to wrap up the dinner with freshly grated zest.

Just several bite-sized confectionery items satiating our final cravings. Among all, pistachio macaron was my favourite which was certainly not an easy flavour to perform well, very often being over-sweetened but this one was just right.

Net charge being close to $800 after credit card discount was a good deal after all, given the impressive dishes in general with reasonable portion. Starters tasted better than the main courses, with my vote going to the foie gras creme brulee! One may expect a grand hall where michelin-quality dishes could be enjoyed, but you may be surprised that they are in fact hidden in down-to-earth eateries in the industrial area like this, the BriKetenia.
