I love Spanish food, and I love Mexican food even more, so I was certainly excited about trying tapas with a Mexican twist. According to OpenRice, this place has really weird hours: it's open from 2 to 3, then from 6 to 11. So I called them between 2 and 3 to book a reservation and everything seemed to go fine. According to OpenRice, this place has really weird hours: it's open from 2 to 3, then from 6 to 11. So I called them between 2 and 3 to book a reservation and everything seemed to go fine. Then around 7pm, an hour before the reservation, I get a call from the restaurant, and they gave me some explanation-- I can't say I really understood it-- but the long and short of it was that if we wanted to eat there, we'd have to eat across the street at a bar they own called Bar Medusa.

Anyway, the accomodations were fine with me. It was really the letting-me-know-at-the-last-minute thing that bothered me.

On tripadvisor somehow Bar Medusa has a 5/5 rating and is #183 on the list of things to do in Hong Kong. I wouldn't go that far. It has nice enough character, but (a) there weren't any patrons, other than us, the entire time we were there-- and we were really there for the restaurant across the street (b) the first two cocktails we asked for, which were on the menu, couldn't be made because they didn't have the ingredients and (c) although it's a New Orleans (?) themed bar, and one point in the night we heard two disco songs, each played twice, one of which had exactly one word (repeated) as its only lyric and the other of which had two words ("freak out"). The music wasn't bad, but really lacked variety and a fit with the surrounding vibe.

I never pass up olives with my tapas, but I don't know any tapas places in Hong Kong with really great olives, and I haven't changed my mind after coming here. These were decently flavored but a little on the mushy side. (Fair)

Pan con tomate: at a number of places around town, pan con tomate is bread and romesco sauce. Now I'm not complaining, because romesco sauce is great, but when I think p.c.t., I think bread rubbed in garlic and tomato. That's what they have at Bocadito, but unfortunately the bread is low quality and soggy. (Alright)

I got the tortilla because supersupergirl below recommended it and said "the egg was fluffy and soft with silky potatoes in it." It was exactly that. (Good)

My favorite dish of the night had to be the "grilled baby vegetables, Mexican street-food style." There was a bunch of veggies: carrots, baby corn, bell peppers, leeks, mushrooms, and probably some other stuff. I will mention that the mushrooms were fantastically flavorful, but the whole thing was very good, and had a nice, light, flavorful sauce. (Highly Recommended)

There was a jalapeno thing on the menu, so I got it because that's who I am. From the description ("pork-stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon") they sounded a lot like what's known in the US barbecue circles as atomic buffalo... um, it's abbreviated "ABT". And indeed that's what it was, except without cheese or cream cheese. They were alright: everything was cooked through (that's an issue with these things), and there was a little spice. (OK)

The menu also includes taquitos (little tacos). We got the carnitas: "pulled pork in a Mixiote sauce served with Mojo Picon". In case you're wondering, the Mixiote sauce is just the chili pepper sauce the meat is barbecued in, and Mojo Picon is a Canary Islands chili-garlic sauce. We liked these tacos. The meat was tender and the tortillas were some of the best I've had in HK. I'd order this agian. (Recommended)

We also got the fish tacos. We got them because HK Magazine said they were a "hit" and said what I said about the carnitas: "We’d happily order them again." I guess what HK Mag saw as "incredibly tender" fish, I thought was insufficiently firm. The tacos were overly sauced and the whole thing was a mushy mess. A difference of opinion. (Would Not Order Again)

Overall, my opinion of the food at (or perhaps I should say "from") Bocadito is that it's OK. I ordered basically everything that stood out to me on the menu, and the only things I particularly liked were the carnitas tacos-- which are always pretty good anywhere-- and the vegetables. They were some pretty good vegetables and if I were with a vegetarian friend who wanted a snack, I might go back here. But I can't think of another occasion for returning. Not with so many better tapas places around.
