When one asks what food do you think represents Hong Kong, the egg tart is one of them. There are many MANY places that sell this. From dim sum restaurants to bakeries. I walked by this bakery in Sai Wan Ho called 金樺餅店 (English name: Kam Wah Cakey Shop). It was like any other old style Hong Kong bakery. It had Hong Kong style western bread and cakes.

It had a tray of freshly baked egg tarts at the window.

I didn't think anything of it until I saw this grand proclamation. This place was voted on the best 5 egg tarts on Hong Kong Island. Really? I drew  a blank. I had no idea. Did you? Curiosity took over and I  went in to get one.

One egg tart was $4 each. They used a shortbread crust instead of the old style flaky ones. The crust was sturdy and didn't fall apart when I bit into it. The custard was smooth and not too sweet. It was fairly good. Was it the best 5 in Hong Kong? I don't know. But it was pretty delicious.
