I went there a few months ago and the phone line was a little difficult to get through ~ so my companion dropped by there and reserved a table. He said he met a staff who used to work for 峰壽司. I guess the staff in Japanese restaurants just move around or that there is a connection between the two places.Like other izakaya, there was no shortage of drinks to choose from. There was some funny word play on the menu: handsome or beauty beer ($68). In fact they refered to same drink - big size draft
No comment at all for the whole slab of cucumber as well. It did look fresh and crunchy. Then came the meat part ~~ Different kinds of meat were featured on the menu, with different price tags and from ordinary to premium grade . It was such a simple enjoyment to taste from the inside - assorted "internal organs" to outside - karubi, karubi.. and more karubi.. well other parts such as ロース, ヒレor バラ, which are quite common in Japan seemed to be missing. The grill unfortunately did not perform too well in giving the meat some charcoal flavour or even some "charred" look. Some meat turned out to resemble steamed meat instead of grilled. Luckily there were quite a variety of my favourite tongue and ハラミ, and they outshone other meat with flying colours (perhaps due to my personal preference). I never understand why ハラミ (meat from the diaphragm) was categorized as "internal organs". They taste just like normal meat but with strong (in a good way) beef flavour.
Not to be missed of course are other internal parts like liver or beef cheek.
There were some specialities unique to the place. One is the "surprisingly-big" karubi (yet again! Though I doubt if it was the same part but was simply given the same name). Whenever one was served, all servers would cheer in joy. A little embarassed (haha! I am old) though quite fun for young people. The meat was nice but was a bit too thin for my liking, especially when this was done by the staff to whom I kept on saying: "half done is fine half done is fine". Since it was too thin, it was difficult not to over-cook it. It was good fun to order but not too much fun to eat. Then came the beef with uni, which was also done by the staff for fear we would ruin this combination. (I would, for sure ~ in the sense that I would probably eat them separately). The conclusion for me was the same as the previous one - good fun to order, but I won't order it again when I return. There will never be too much meat if the BBQ festival is ended with rice and cold noodles. We ordered vegetable rice and egg and onion rice. The portion was quite generous though I found the rice a bit too soft and flavourless. Lastly, we settled our meat-filled stomach with a gentle bowl of cold noodles. $38 for a small bowl, it was quite a good share between 2 people. We were served with tea and yogurt wine (?) as an end to the BBQ evening. The service was friendly (though a bit "clumsy" at times). The ventilation was good but the place was still a bit too packed, hence a bit too noisy and smoky. Overall it was a yakiniku place worth visiting again though on second thought, nothing was quite memorable and there was no stand-out dish for me. Even for high grade meat the meat flavour was not too outstanding. I will prefer Gyu-kaku (for cheaper price) or Iroha (for better meat) to this for BBQ meat honestly.
Anyway, considering the price, it is a place worth going every now and then if you fancy a warm and lively atmostphere.
