I walk past this restaurant many times before and it seemed to be pretty busy most of the time. So once I saw that there was no queue (it was pretty late in the evening), I decided to try it out myself. They have a number of rice to choose from. I was in two minds between the pork shoulder rice and the pork chop rice. I chose the latter because it was slightly more expensive $55 and thus should be of better quality (?). The normal set, without adding extra rice, was quite substantial already. It
The tofu was average and pretty small. The miso soup was nothing special.
On the other hand, the rice was apparently steamed together with a type of charcoal, Bicho Sumi (備長炭). It's supposed to be good for health and might improve the texture of the rice. After trying the rice, I noticed that it was drier and more crisp than normal Japanese steamed rice. It's quite interesting. But since it's a bit dry, it would be better if there were more sauce on the rice. There weren't a lot of sauce. Having said that, most of the sauce was at the bottom of the bowl and was a bit more than shown on the photo (unfortunately, I only discovered this at the end of the meal).
The pork chop itself was not bad. Although I've tried softer pork chops elsewhere, it's good quality. The spring onion which accompanied it was very fresh too.
Service-wise there isn't much to comment about. They looked a bit serious and nervous but were OK.
The interior was small but quite nice actually. The tables were not placed too close to each other.
All in all, this is a borderline good due to its good value and substantial size. The pork chop, though not excellent, was pretty good - definitely better than most pork chop rice you get at most local eateries.
A decent place for a quick meal if you happen to be nearby.
