I usually don't spend time writing reviews. But after a few deception, this one was a kicking point.
2 different experiences, but the second one will probably be the last one...
First time going to this restaurant: The first was maybe a month a half ago. My boyfriend and I were walking around Tin Hau, looking for a nice place to eat. And around a corner, we found this cute country side style looking restaurant. When I saw it, it kind of reminded me a small countryside village in France. And when you enter, you are not disappointed! So for the atmosphere, I have to say, Poppy's is a great place to eat. The first time we came there, we had "angle hair pasta with mushroom" and pizza. The pasta is pretty good, and pizza very nice as well! I don't know if it's homemade or not but the ingredients are good (good cheese, nice tomatoes...). Only disappointing point (and a big point if you are a little bit interested in italian cuisine): there was no base on the pizza. Normally, the base is either tomato sauce (the most common) or a cream base. But there was nothing! So the pizza, even tho the taste was nice and balanced, was a bit too dry. I think the base is one of the most important lessons when you want to cook a pizza (my italian friend was really surprised when I told him this story!).
Anyway, apart from this issue, all the rest was good. We didn't have any dessert, and the wine was nice.
Second time (on last friday, 13/01): Big deception.
After I tried the pizza, I was pretty confident that this restaurant would know how to cook decent French/European food. I mean, they know how to cook it, obviously.
This time, I tried (too a little risk maybe): the "Pan-fried French duck leg with Blackberry sauce". I know the French duck, as I am from this duck's birthplace (south west of France, the "Landes region" to be accurate). There, the duck was a tiny little leg, tasted like chicken... I'm not really sure if it was a genuine French duck. Tasted more like one of those ducks you see at local BBQ restaurants, hooked alongside with pork and chicken. The taste was really not there, and the dish was not that big. With the "French duck", there was only 3 slices of potatoe and 3 pieces of brocoli. I would have served this dish with more potatoes, or green beans to make it more consistent. They should definitively not tell the word "French" for this dish. I do think it's bad for the French cuisine image. And local people eating there, of course, think they are eating real french food!!
But this is not over: for the dessert, I ordered a 'Crême brûlée", which is a classic dessert from France. Normally it is a perfect balance between eggs, milk and cream I think, that you just caramelise on top with a blowtorch. This dessert was very eggy, and the milk used must not be a good milk. It was barely caramelised, and the taste was totally different from what it should be. Even at a supermarket in France, for that price, you can get a great and tasty creme brulee....
My friend ordered a tiramisu: normally to prepare this dish you have to work with layers. You first put a layer of biscuits (that you previously dipped in coffee and marsala), and then a layer of mascarpone based cream, and you repeat the same steps 2 or 3 times. Finally you end with chocolate powder on top. The tiramisu at Poppy's was a kind of whipped cream, with chocolate powder on top. No biscuit, no good creamy taste... It was a disaster.
And local people think they had a real tiramisu/creme brulee...
It's just so fake.
So yes, if you are not too picky about food (especially French people), or if you just was to eat some "westernised" food in a nice and cozy place, Poppy's is very good.
But if you want to have a first taste or try French/western food to "check" what people in Europe eat, DON'T GO!! There are plenty of real French/Europe taste places in HK. Maybe a little bit more expensive, but you would finally get to taste the real taste.

The "master" server is nice (seems to know some things about wine). But the rest of the staff is not very friendly...
