It pains me to write my third non-positive review of food this week. This was a quick and desperate mistake of a meal, made out of laziness which deterred us from climbing up to Elgin street for our original plan. We ordered a Spring Onion Ramen and a thick cut pork ramen. It did not bode well when I saw them stick the thick pork slices into the microwave right under our nose in the open kitchen! No effort was even made to hide this fact. The pork turned out ok in texture but not very flavourful.
I think the worst thing about this ramen though is that their soup base tastes weird. I assume it is tonkotsu as it is the only soup base that was offered (the only difference between items on the menu seems to be the toppings that you can add). However, it tastes like an indecisive blend of fish soup and... *blegh* for lack of a better word. The soup in the spring onion ramen was saved marginally by the presence of spring onions which masked the taste. As for the other bowl, I managed to eat another few bites of it by dipping it in the sauce that came with the extra piece of char siu we ordered.

The taller guy who seemed like the manager was actually quite nice and the chef was ok too. However, the skinny guy with gray thick-framed glasses is a blight on the service industry. He just came by wordlessly and started grabbing things off our condiments tray without returning them. When I asked him if what he'd taken was sesame oil, he said NO, it's just Gyoza sauce! I asked if they had any in the kitchen and he just exasperatedly said NO! and walked off with a black face. Then he came back again to steal our entire condiments tray, again reaching between us without even trying to say excuse me and nearly bonking us on the head... What the?! Can you at least try and get them from the side instead of reaching between us?! I get it, it's nearly closing time - but actually, some people had just ordered stuff when this happened, so it wasn't like we were holding that waiter up from going home...

Perhaps the saving grace of this restaurant is that the seating is actually rather spacious and comfortable for a ramen bar. However, I'll take a delicious bowl of ramen from smiling waitstaff while perched on a rickety chair in the streets at Butao any day...
