This is easily the worst high tea set I've had in the Soho district. THE worst. Portobellos' $160 + 10% Tea set So they give you 4 quarters of a lettuce, turkey/ham and tomato sandwich, 2 scones, 2 slices of whatever cake they want to give you (Mocha cheesecake in our case), cream, 2 small sachets of jam, what else....oh yes, and 2 drinks. 1. Toasted sandwich It wasn't terrible but it wasn't tasty either. The lettuce was soggy and the ham/turkey wasn't very fresh, said G. I could not give my opinion because my triangle did NOT contain any meat. But the toast was nice and crisp.
2. Scones were about the worst I've ever paid for. They were too dry, hard, not crumbly in the mouth, lacked the buttery taste that scones ought to have, and the cream wasn't even devonshire cream. The jam was of jelly-like consistency, as expected, because they came in little packets, and did not come in a jar. Scones should be hot, too. the cream should melt slightly on the surface. None of these good things happened.
3. mocha cheesecake Very, very bad. Yes I could taste a bit of the mocha in the chocolate-colored layers but the pale yellow bit was like....a thoroughly whipped butter and sugar mixture. There was no value in tasting it. I could make out the cheesy taste in the chocolate-colored layer though.
Plus, the slices were so small. They are stingy. The two slices combined made up i think about 2/3 of an a-la-carte cheesecake. Not really worth it if you're going for good cake (Portobello's toffee banoffee is highly recommended though, just to be fair).
Conclusion:
Unamused.
Do NOT go for the tea set, whatever you do.
Do try the banoffee pie though.
Poor service attitude too.
maybe you should try take-out banoffee pie....
