I dropped Portobello on an early weekend morning, hungry and looking for breakfast in the area. Portobello is nicely located right beside the escalator, open to the street with a welcoming facade. Having previously lived in London, the name of the shop conjured up the impression of the market there and the great eateries in the area, also every time I passed by Portobello at night it seemed to have a nice atmosphere to it, so I decided to try it out for the breakfast.The interior decor of the sh
The interior decor of the shop was interesting, with the faux books by the side making it feel like someone's study. Having just sat down, I thought that everything seemed great and decided to order some breakfast.
I ordered the eggs benedict, and my breakfast companion ordered the BLT sandwich. We also ordered juice as well as a vanilla latte.
Now, before going on to describe the food, I would like to warn all readers who easily get squeamish or grossed-out to skip the rest of the description below, suffice to say - I will not be going back.
Let me start with the drinks. The juice was normal orange juice, frankly I don't remember much about it, but I'm sure it tasted fine.
The vanilla latte was too sweet, I would say it is sweeter than the Starbucks sweet coffee drinks and without much coffee taste to it, it tasted like it was made from instant vanilla latte mix.
The BLT tasted great, I had a couple of bites, bacon was fried nice and crispy, lettuce and tomatoes tasted fresh. However my companion found a hair in it, she lost her appetite and stopped eating.
I continued on with my eggs benedict, hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy, poached eggs were done just right, on top of spinach nicely cooked. Finishing one eggs benedict, fishing through the spinach on the other egg, I found another hair which looked like it came from a different person, I lost my appetite and left the rest of the food.
Other small complaints were, the server was coughing while making the drinks, but neither of us ended up getting sick so I guess it was not a big issue.
I would like to give them a better rating, unfortunately because of the hygiene issues it is hard for me to remember the positives about the experience.
