A food fad in HK that has risen to popularity in the past two years is Chicken Hot Pot (雞煲) which originated from various parts of China and has become some sort of social gathering event amongst young people. The idea is to stir fry a half/whole chicken in a hotpot-pot with very a heavy tasting, aromatic sauce and after the chicken pieces are eaten, broth is added to the pot and guests can continue to enjoy hotpot with the remaining sauce/soup. Basically, it’s a very salty hot pot. I’m fairly l
Last weekend we had dinner with some relatives who highly recommended this particular restaurant in Tsuen Wan. They’ve been here several times already and apparently it was so good that my sister had to make her friends travel all the way to Tsuen Wan just to try it out. That gave me high expectations for this place..
The restaurant is located on Sam Pei Square (三坡坊) which is a small street filled with a bunch of hotpot/barbecue restaurants. Tables are set up on the street so there would be people eating outside even on a hot day. Since we had 7 people we called in ahead to make a reservation and had no trouble getting a table (it did take us almost an hour to find parking though..ugh)
-The sauce was ok, but since it wasn’t spicy it lacked the aromatic taste from the spices as I would expect.
-The chicken itself was a big disappointment. They seemed to have overused meat tenderizer and the texture was very mushy. I hate eating over-tenderized meat – I would rather eat tough overcooked meat than this.
We also ordered a Grilled Fish Pot with Saba Grouper which is what they’re famous for. Thankfully they decided to be adventurous and ordered this mildly spicy. It came in a shallow pot with some broth underneath the fish.
-Their “spicy sauce” seemed to rely heavily on soy bean paste which masked all the other flavours. When I ate the fish it seems like all I could taste was a slightly spicy soy bean paste.
-Same for the soup, when I tried drinking it there was a strong soy bean paste. It was also very fishy and I felt like I was drinking liquid steamed fish @.@”
Since there were already quite a bit of protein in both main dishes so we didn’t have to order a lot more sides for the hotpot. Everything is decent and fresh, and I especially liked eating lettuce with the heavy sauces. One of the side dish worth mentioning was the beef -
They seem to have a promotion going on where you can take a picture and check in to the restaurant on Facebook and they’ll give you a can of free pop. This was slightly hard to achieve with a table of social-media-illiterate middle age people XD but since my uncle is a frequent customer the boss decided to comp all of our pops anyway
Since my parents paid I didn’t find out how much it was exactly, but I think it was around the $800-$900 range. Not bad for 7 people, but if I were to go with a few friends I’d go somewhere else more authentic.
