It was a weekday lunchtime, and at 1.30pm, this place is practically empty. Why is it so quiet? I'm a little worried, but go in and order anyway, as I've wanted to try this place for a while since Afuri is such a popular ramen brand in Japan. I got the Lunch Set ($108) which had a choice of ramen, a daily appetizer, a snack and a drink. It was a no-brainer for value, so I selected the Yuzu Shoyu Ramen, fried gyoza and iced sencha. I got the Lunch Set ($108) which had a choice of ramen, a daily appetizer, a snack and a drink. It was a no-brainer for value, so I selected the Yuzu Shoyu Ramen, fried gyoza and iced sencha. You have to remember your table number after being seated, as you must key it in at the self-service kiosk after you complete your order.
The food arrives in a couple of minutes, and is artfully presented before you. The bowls and table setting are simple and uncluttered, and I feel a bit of zen when I look upon the meal before me.
What hits me when I start to dig in is the flavour of yuzu which both compliments and cuts through the broth. The taste is clean, refreshing, energizing. I smell the fragrance of yuzu as I'm slurping; it is like aromatherapy as I eat. The noodles are not springy like an alkaline noodle, and is more like a buckwheat soba, but somehow still retains the chew of a ramen. This is novel to me, and pairs amazingly well with the broth. There is an aroma of chicken to the broth, and the clear oil clings to the noodles but is not heavy at all. The chashu has been blowtorched to give it a nice char, and is the richest taste of the dish. Compared with the noodles, it feels heavy, so the one piece that you are provided with is more than enough. Other toppings include chopped mizuna leaves, half an egg, and menma, all of which boost this perfectly rounded ramen.
The gyoza and appetizer of wakame salad are really lesser sidekicks to the shining star that is the ramen. While both good, they are really an afterthought. I had ordered the fried gyoza, and it came as 2 deep fried morsels accompanied by a mountain (literally, it was squeezed into the shape of a volcano) of kewpie, with chilli sauce in the centre as its "lava". It was way too rich after the light, clean ramen, so beware of ending the meal on a heavy note.
As I sat here, the restuarant began to fill slowly with a trickle of customers. At 2pm, it was still less than 50% full, but I don't believe that the lack of patrons is a reflection on the quality of food here. People who come here know what they come for. It may be a bit pricier but really, with the Lunch Set, it is excellent value.
My experience today completely lived up to the Afuri reputation in my mind. This ramen is delicious, and I would come again. And selfishly, I hope people don't suddenly flood the place because I want to get a table easily the next time that I visit ; )
