I have been to Bar of Soup many times. Have tried soup only once...and why is that? Well, "Bar of Soup" really is a bar selling soup, 5 to 6 selections per day, it might sound boring, so they also sell baked goods -- cookies, cupcakes (beautifully decorated ones), cakes and chocolate brownies. I'm not here to write about soup, like many others have tried, I'm here to write about everything else.
Under the roof of minimalist designs, Bar of Soup hopped out of an IKEA magazine -- white sheves, shiveling stools (comfortable, by the way), glass countertops with sparkling clean furniture. The white-ness of it all seemed daunting, yet while you investigate your way through pots after pots of fragrant soup with chockful of ingredients (vegetables, beans etc) you realize it might be time for desserts.
Chocolate indulgence ($20 apiece) is a wedge of cake so dark you woud rethink calling oyster sauce color as "black". The texture resembles to the American mud cake, with moist crumbs but none of the tooth-aching sweetness. Chocolate flavour is deep with just a tint of coffee in it. Sugee Cake is made of semolina, rich with eggs and butter. Um....I moan inwardly when I took my first bite and never waited until the last crumb was consumed.
Cupcakes tend to disappoint as they are too beautiful to eat but the cake itself are moist but don't taste very strong of anything (butter, or eggs, or for that matter, anything at all). Note that my favorite is the packaged ginger-snap cookies ($18) They are cookies that taste strongly of ginger with reasonable heat but mellowed out by blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and maybe allspice?! Spice-lovers will adore this cookie, subtle but not overwhelming!
Other recent discoveries include Rolled-oat cookies, kumquat cookies (not recommending this one, the only thing "kumquat" about the cookies is the dried kumquat slice on top). There is also a new cake they are seling (name forgotten) made entirely of coconut sugar and nut flour... totally rich and scrumptious.
