ordered the pumpkin soup and the skirt steak with garlic fries.

the pumpkin soup was watery and lacked in richness or any resmeblance to a pumpkin soup.

the steak was incredibly tasteless with a burnt outerlayer.. so burnt was the taste.

the garlic chips were overcooked and the garlic overpowered everything,

besides the great decor and the good service, recommend going somewhere else for food.

only good thing would be happy hour, and you'll need it to get through the food 👍🏼

First of all, the menus were confusing. The regular menu has "tacos" (plural) on it, and describes the tacos. It doesn't say "if you order this we will also give you x, y, and z with it." The set lunch menu says "choice of taco" (in the singular) and says it comes with fries (plus the normal set stuff: salad, drink, dessert). Since we wanted more than one taco and fries are a bizarre acompaniment to tacos, we tried to order off the regular menu. After a bunch of confused discussion with the server, we discovered that the tacos on the regular menu, although they don't seem to come with fries, do come with fries; and that the "taco" on the set menu, although it doesn't seem to be in the plural, is in the plural; and thus the menu items, differently described though they may be, are nevertheless identical.

OK, so we got the set taco(s).

The meal begins with a Caesar salad. I believe that I've never had a Caesar salad come before I was about to eat taco(s). It's pretty paired down: romaine, parmesan, croutons. The croutons were a little weak, but it was mostly fine. It was mediocre given the mad Caesar salad set lunch game some places run in this town. C

Alright, french fries with taco(s)? I mean, they obviously have corn tortillas and a deep fryer, and what's more they have tortillas chips and salsa on the menu! Bizarre as that was, the red stuff wasn't ketchup. Cocktail sauce or marinara sauce or something, but not ketchup. And the tacos were meh. Steak tacos are not just pieces of steak in a taco. Or at least they shouldn't be. Not particularly good. C-

The carnitas tacos were better, but not by a lot. Here's how you make good carnitas: you slow-cook the pork until it's falling-apart tender, then you fry it in fat to get it crispy. It's amazing and it's pretty easy to do at home. These carnitas were oddly dry and chewy. I don't even know how you do that. C

My ultimate judgment is roughly: "That's not a thing." You don't eat fries with taco(s). You don't dip fries in marinara sauce. You don't just put a piece of steak on a tortilla and call it a steak taco. That's not a thing. Nobody does that. For a reason, nobody does that.

It wasn't bad. But it was only OK.

I was thinking just doing beer but the servers recommmanded me trying some of the red. They literally gave me some little tastings. Somehow, I started swirling the wine glasses with my fds. My fd told me they have the so-far most comprehensive Cali wines selection and seems they enjoys the wine.(me too) They also have the "wine machine" that is very cool~ We can like pour our own wines. I guess there are around 15 machines,  collectively have more than 40 diff wines. We are going try this next time.

We were sitting at the bar area which is right in front of the open kitchen. The bar area is small but perfectly fit four big man. We have couples of the garlic fries, some sliders tacos and the NY steak. They are absolutely stunning and cooked to perfection!!! One thing to notice is the ventilation system SUCKSSSSSS. It seems not working at all, we were almost choking when eating. I think they need to fix this immediately!!

Anyway, we were having a great night!

Camembert, Onion, Mushroom Bruschetta-
Grilled sourdough crostini paired with sautéed mushroom and my all-time favorite camembert cheese made to bite size, easy to eat every ingredient all at once. Crispy on the bottom and soft on the top, nice balance.

Grilled Cheese With Sliced Green Apple-
I LOVE THIS! This grilled cheese sandwich took me to heaven, as well as that homemade tomato soup, I actually used it as a dipping sauce and both actually matched quite well. The soup was very rich and thick, didn’t taste anything like canned tomato soup.

Fried Calamari
Crispy on the outside, and chewy on the insides. Even though I didn’t dip it with the spicy cabernet dipping sauce because I don’t eat spicy, but the calamari itself was well prepared and was not soggy at all. Yummmy~
Overall I’d say the restaurant delivers good quality snacks and beverages, with a hint of cultural food (Mexican American I’d say) in it. Worth a try!

I decided to come here again to catch up with one of my best friends. 'Good wine and conversation' sort of night.

We didn't use the wine tasting machines this time because we were content with the recommended merlot that came with our food. These machines allow you to try a lot of varieties of wine that many places would not stereotypically offer so for those who are unsure of which wine they like to take, they would find it helpful to go to a venue like this.

I did not try the beef sliders or tacos but the sliders looked juicy and both smelled incredible. I had the salmon sliders, the fish was tender and they did not use too much sauce. I have a certain disdain for sauces, so the fact I ate it and appreciated the sweetness of it says a lot to me. Delicious as usual. If you are looking for something a little different to try, order the swordfish. Cooked to perfection and went perfectly with the guacamole with mango sauce. A meaty texture and subtle tangy-sweetness to each bite.

The service is always amazing there, they are friendly and just put a smile on your face.

We left the restaurant pretty satisfied, although whether it is value for money will be debated on. California Vintage is not for the frugal but it not so highly priced you walk away feeling it! Once in a while certainly works for me.

The restaurant is quite small with wooden high tables and stools. Surrounding the main seating area are wine dispenser machines serving Californian wine. I could not help getting super excited and thought to myself 'I should come at the right hour for its true purpose...".

Anyway, a slight hiccup, I enquired about the booking made by N and the waiter could not find the record..
but given that there was no one else in the restaurant, he apologised and I was swiftly seated..

I then noticed there was an Ipad preloaded with the restaurant's own system on most of the tables. I had a quick play with it. A user friendly system nicely presenting the variety of Californian wine on offer!
nice touch!

N joined me shortly and a simple brunch menu was brought to us. As you could see, the restaurant tries quite hard to "stick to" its restaurant name naming the food after Californian places.. "SAN FRANCISCO omelet"... "SAN DIEGO scramble"... "NAPA COUNTY breakfast"... I personally found that quite cute.
We both went for the Napa County Breakfast and a glass of orange juice.

Now at this point, it is worth pausing a moment and consider what is meant by "Californian Cuisine". Surely it does not merely mean giving the food regional names? When I visited San Francisco, my friends there raved about Californian Cuisine's focus in "fusion", using fresh ingredients with a strong attention to presentation.

Napa County Breakfast! okay.

A simple breakfast dish. Let's cover the components one by one:-
*Two eggs, scrambled or fried* -
I went for scrambled eggs. I was delighted to see sprinkles of spring onion and black pepper on the yellow silky well-folded pile of scrambled egg adding both colour and flavour. The chef was obviously generous with the cream when preparing this dish and presented to us a perfect balance of "milkiness" and "egginess" (if there were such words
). Carefully executed and comfortably far from being over-cooked; it was soft, creamy and very hearty. I loved this.

*Sausage* -
My first impression was "it looks super oily all over the skin..", and unfortunately I was right. As I sliced the sausage open, oil oozed out (....) and I could even see cubes of fat inside the sausage (!!!). Don't get me wrong - I am well aware that "fat" is an important and irreplaceable element for juicy sausages. But this sausage, I cannot blame it all on the chef/restaurant, is not very appealing.. perhaps the restaurant should change its sourcing..
Anyhow, it was well-grilled, not burnt and served piping hot.

*Bacon* -
I do not feel that much effort was paid into this dish. It was a warm day and I assure you that I attended the bacon soon after I was served (after trying a bite of each the egg and the oily sausage..), but the bacon was not even warm by then..
a bit disappointed. Nothing much more to say, just pieces of normal bacon which was not served hot enough.

*Pinquito beans* -
Awesome choice to replace the (more British) baked beans with the (more Californian/Mexican) pinquito beans; now it justifies the Californian element of the breakfast dish a bit more.
Nicely spiced with a sweet BBQ-sauce undertaste, the pinquito beans was extremely rich in flavour giving me a good and well-appreciated hot kick in that lazy warm Sunday morning.

*Sourdough toast* -
Sourdough bread is celebrated throughout the Californian region (so again, well done to the restaurant for bringing a more genuine Californian element into the breakfast dish). Sourdough bread normally has a distinct mildly sour taste. The sourdough toast served here was topped over with the creamy scrambled eggs though. It was therefore unfortunate that the "toast" became slightly soggy and no longer "toasty", and the supposedly distinct flavour of sourdough was also significantly underplayed. Perhaps it will be better to serve the bread by the side?

All in all, a fair brunch experience but there are many other better (or similar standard) places around.

As I finished up my brunch, I could not help thinking once again.. "I should have come at the right hour for its true purpose".

And so, I know I would be back, probably not for brunch, but for drinks

By way of background, I was born and raised in California, moved to Hong Kong a while ago on my own after graduating from college (the first one in my family graduate college)...I am Portuguese American (Grandparents are "straight off the boat", Grandfather moved with my Grandmother to California and our family owes Tuna Boats)...I grew up on the boats, been free diving, lobster diving, deep sea fishing, spear fishing my whole life. My family has sold a few of the boats in our fleet with business not being what it used to and bought a vineyard in Sonoma County and ever since I can remember its always been fish and wine at every meal (along with the tradition Portuguese dishes and staples -- Linguica being one of my favorites). SO naturally I was very excited when I discovered California Vintage (may too excited) in Hong Kong.

Ok I will start with the Positives:
1. Great selection of california wines
2. Quality Beef (tri-tip they serve is good and one of my favorite cuts of beef)
3. Atmosphere -- I like the small feel and tables close together (We have a big family so its fun to sit close to other tables, gives you a feel of big reunion/thanksgiving dinner), the restaurant is perfectly lite (not too bright but definitely not the dungeon feel you sometimes experience at "romantic" restaurants)
4. Great for date
5. Ability to choose if you want to sit inside or on one of the four/five tables outside which is fun for people watching
6. some may not like it but I found the bathrooms to be interesting and unique
7. Unique food menu selection and does its best to use ingredients from California (Gilroy garlic for example among many other menu choices-- the garlic fries are great)
8. Cool Ipads to order food and select your wine choice (also gives you background on the wine and information on the taste of the wine)

Ok now to the Negatives:
1. WAY OVER PRICED for what you get...over 100HKD for three bite size fish tacos for example. Fish tacos in california are at least 6 inch big fillets and the best fish taco spot in California serves them for $2.50 US (around 20 HKD); 2 will fill you up so you spend 5 US dollars, less than 50HKD...you better order 4 orders of California Vintage's fish tacos to fill up...
2. Although a great selection of wine, again WAY OVER PRICED for their version of "Full Glass" of wine (you maybe get 1/4 of your glass filled...pathetic. Don't even waste your time getting a "half glass"...by the time you get back to your table it will be gone, its about a good size sip. Their "full glass" selection is a "taste" given at vineyards in california when you go on wine tasting tours. I recommend walking over to Park n Shop and getting a bottle of wine from California for maybe 80 HKD more than two "full glasses" of wine at CV
3. Every item on the menu we ordered was tiny. One tiny slice of Tri-Tip for 150+ HKD (you can get a Tri-Tip 8 inch sandwich for 9 US dollars (70 or so HKD), three tiny fish tacos, a cup of gilroy garlic fries, tiny slice of chicken, three tiny little sliders.

Save up your money and go visit California to experience California for yourself...this is not California and am embarrassed that it claims to be...

This is a poor example of what California truly is. California is big BBQ, Great fresh fish, and lots of wine all at great prices. I get its Hong Kong, real estate is expensive so prices need to be high so you can make rent. I would never recommend this place to any of my friends and family. Like I said earlier, save your money up and go fly to Napa Valley, Central Coast, SF and SD to try the real thing (not to mention enjoying it in California's beauty, not a busy street in Hong Kong) and get your moneys worth!

Other Info.

Most of the time when I walked around Hollywood Road in the evening, I saw crowd of people inside.
This time when I was there at 4:30pm, it was quiet. And because I was hungry, so I made my first attempt on it.

Probably it was still office hours, so I was the only guest when I entered.
iPads were placed on most of the tables as additional menu. I could choose and see the food photos before I placed my orders.

Firstly, I ordered a starter - Marin Camembert and Mushroom Bruschetta @ $88.

I was told it would take 5-10 min for preparation. So I picked up the wine list and ordered a glass of Pinot Noir.

The appearance of the wine was clear with ruby red color.
The nose was clean and clear with hint of berries.
The taste of wine is sweet, with medium body, medium tannin and low acidity.
It was perfect balanced the cheese and mushroom inside my mouth.
However, I though the portion was not large enough to fit my stomach.
Then I went for another dish - California Sliders with Angus Beef Burger and Bravo Farms Cheddar Cheese @ $98

There were 2 mini size burgers with some homemade tomato sauce onside.
The burgers were juicy. And the homemade tomato sauce was very nice.
Actually, I preferred some English mustard with the burger, and there was no fries to come with the tomato sauce.
So I thought it was a little bit wastage for the nice sauce.

Overall, the food was delicious with nice presentation, the wine was good, and the service was excellent.
I am 100% sure I will come back.

California Sliders with Porchetta and Garlicky green.
