To preface, my expectations of mexican food in HK are rock-bottom. i eat El Burro and Cali-Mex with minimal complaint even though i know they're both mediocre. But Taco Loco is TERRIBLE. First of all, everything is served in bizarre disposable wrapping/plastic containers... made for takeaway as the place is, there needs to be some minimum standard for dine-in right? no? okay.
As for the food:
Chips and Guacamole
Chips are overfried and stale - way too crunchy and with no appealing flavor except oil
Guacamole and salsa not bad actually. But served in tiny plastic containers which kills all the appeal (for takeaway i know). The chips just ruin it however.
Barbacoa Taco
Carnitas Taco
Beef Machaca Taco
Some Chicken Taco
Chorizo Taco
No need for individual descriptions because they're all bland, dry and lifeless. If you took a bite of any of them, I cannot imagine you being able to tell what meat they were. Served with blackbeans, and nothing else on a soggy corn (i think?) tortilla. Just no effort to be good at all.
Real mexican food is effortless. Fresh ingredients (often very cheap cuts of meat) and a few condiments with a bit of hotsauce/salsa. Tex-Mex is more complicated and accounts for American preferences with a lot more cheese and sauce. Both have their defenders and I don't mind either. Taco loco is neither. It's just terrible.
Could not recommend less.
