7-layer choc cake:老實說其實我不是朱古力粉絲,稍濃烈一點的朱古力就會受不了,但這一款蛋糕真是令我也折服。上面兩層是濃度較高、質感厚重的朱古力,之後換成了細膩柔滑、低濃度的朱古力慕斯,只吃慕斯/朱古力醬當然會膩,於是再多兩層不同濃度的朱古力蛋糕,難得是這蛋糕質地濕軟不乾硬,合我心意;尾二是口感實淨濃度又高的朱古力塊,好似帝苑以前賣的ugly choc cake;最底層是混合朱古力醬的脆脆,比一般常用的餅乾餅底更脆口甜美。
Opera:最愛的款式卻是令人失望的甜品。蛋糕本身已很幹,而朱古力味更是主導了整件蛋糕,只夾雜著非常淡的杏仁香,印象中吃過的opera,怎麼能沒有咖啡香呢,是故這一件實在單調平庸了些。
疑似crème brulee:被店員稱為crème brulee的甜品在我看來其實就是咖啡奶凍,咖啡味淺淺的但清香討好,奶凍質感十分幼滑,濃度也適度不膩口,如果用上百利甜酒添加一份酒味一定會更出色。
椰子熱情果慕斯:外層的椰子慕斯椰子味很濃郁,但問題是實在太甜,TC更是要不停的用水送,才能勉強吃上幾口。內裡的熱情果果餡混合蛋糕卻寧舍美味,蛋糕浸過熱情果果汁後濕潤而果味清新、微酸開胃,似乎還混合了青蘋果的味道,這酸甜感剛好可以緩和一部分椰子慕斯的甜膩。

感覺這裡的咸食算是抵食美味,甜品則外型略強悍過食味,但我真的很推薦7-layer choc cake,連對朱古力向來興趣一般的我都識欣賞呢。

Presented us with the menu and drinks menu too. waiter was very well mannered. atmosphere was nice, not too crowdy like Starbucks.There were groups of ppl, and I saw single ppl reading too. i like that, as you cannot do that in starbucks, always so crowdy. decided to walk to counter to see the cakes. the waitress there quickly told us we can order at the seat. But i explained wanted see what cakes are available. the marble cheese cake looked quite good and then i couldnt decide on 7 layer cake or opera. In the end, chose the opera, as opera can never go wrong.
we sat back at our sofa, the Iced coffee came and the two cakes. Very nice presented with drizzle of jam maybe at the bottom. Tried the marble cheesecake first. It was nice but have tasted better. It was Oreo biscuit base. i could only taste the sweetness, couldnt taste much cheese,and not as creamy as it can be. The Opera was awful. tasted like medicine. we had one spoon and left it.
The coffee was not that good either. Ice more than liquid.
Costed 120 more, Not worth i think.
But next time i would like to try out the 7 layer cake

ONE MORE THING. you dont pay as u order like other Coffee shops, it is more liek a resturant. you request for the bill. I guess because they serve food like pasta, sandwiches. Next time I could give it a try1

趁著飲料未送來前,我好好的在餐廳內繞了一圈觀賞室內空間與擺設。CD牆旁的牆上掛著許多有創意的圖畫,座位旁邊的玻璃桌內擺著許多illy請設計師的設計的espresso杯,略遠一角的玻璃櫥內放著「Bistro Ceylon Tea」的茶包,吧檯佈置的很明亮,不過吧檯裡的兩位Barista與收銀員聊天的聲音都快比顧客大聲是要扣分地!

雖然聊天的聲浪有點大,但是掩蓋不住流露出來的慵懶音樂,對面桌子的兩位小情侶各自塞著耳機聽著Macbook音樂,偶爾互擁一翻、親親小嘴,整間餐廳的感覺讓我覺得很舒服,明亮而柔和的光線也加分不少。

不一會咖啡送上來是讓我吃了一驚!「怎麼這麼大杯呀?」我說。
「因為我幫你點的是Double Espresso,」大力女王說,「大杯的你可以喝久一點。」

咖啡脂的顏色看起來還不錯,雖然香味不算很濃,咖啡脂也不算很厚,但喝起來蠻醇的,不過真要比起來,離我覺得好的三甲之林還有段差距。

大力女王的「Jasmine Lotus Red Tea」還不錯,所以臨走前她多帶了一罐綜合的茶包離開。16個茶包78元雖不便宜,但我覺得在可接受範圍之內。

最誘惑我的還是店內的氛圍吧!下次帶本好書來耗上一個下午,我想是絕對沒有問題的!

後記:
1.回家後上店裡的網站才發現,原來牆上掛著的設計師作品,大約每三個月就會換一次,是提供給設計師展覽之用的,真是一個很好的想法!
2.看看OR才發現,原來甜點也這麼出名!看來我真的要學習好好品嘗甜點!
3.大力女王帶回家的Bistro Tea,官方網站寫上一段很吸引我的話……On the other hand, to us today.....Bistrotea simply defines Genuine Lifestyle Hospitality.

Came here especially for the Marike, before trying it, I wasn’t aware of its ingredients, however I couldn’t taste the coriander in it, but it didn’t taste as nice as I imagined it to be.

Marike:
The outer coconut mousse was creamier than I would have liked it, its texture was more like whipped cream.
The filling was slightly sour.

Piemontois:
This was actually the best, it was coconuttier than the Marike, but not in a creamy way, the outside of the cake was dusted with coconut.
Inside were layers of cake and cream, and pieces of stewed cinnamon apple that were not stewed too soft.
Although the cake description says caramel apples, it tasted more like cinnamon apples.
As well as the apples there were pieces of almonds giving it a slight crunch.

I was here to try mainly one thing - Chef Etienne's AWARD WINNING cake that won a 1st prize in France. Its called the MARIKE. As anyone who has eaten true Parisien -pastry desserts will know, a lot of the offerings there border on being heavy and quite very sweet, definitely not something I envisaged before trying them! Paul's Lafayet and La Maison du Chocolat are prime examples of this! However, the Marike defers from the norm as it is super-light, spongy and most of all incorporates many layers of complex flavours beneath. No wonder it won the golden prize then! Apparently the Marike is made with a mixture of flavours including Coconut, Passionfruit as well as some Greenish Herb (Cilantro I believe), the latter seemingly a trend in French desserts nowadays. This was very enjoyable. The MOUSHOU cake in comparison was much simpler, it being more of a sponge wrap topped with some Strawberries, Raspberries and Blueberries. The sponge seemed a bit over-refrigerated hard in my opinion. Other cakes I've tried in both Epoch's are hit and misses, some are excellent whilst some can still be improved just slightly! ; )

Coffee seems to have improved a fair bit in both Epochs compared to a few years ago too, albeit still inconsistent enough to be detectable in the palate!! My Espresso was mildly satisfying but it seemed like it had passed its prime drinking state, I think its more to do with freshness than the blending? Classifying everything 'imported' as being unfresh like some people love to is a bit of a blanket statement though, especially when you're assuming rather than trusting your own tasting sense. Afterall, people like Dane's fly in their freshly roasted coffee from Sydney ASAP from the roasting warehouse barely 1-2 days after roasting (don't forget, they're brothers), then, when it has landed in HK it is rested for 2-3 weeks to develop their full flavours and body before being sold or made into drinks. After that prime state, Dane's will not hesitate to throw away all of their passed Prime-State beans, even though they're still drinkable and some of them end up being used in Training courses usage. That's why Dane's is very ethical - and they also roast better than anyone else locally for the time being, plus Dane's actually have multiple blends so again, its a blanket statement to write off someone's efforts by referring to them as a whole rather than to the blend. To suggest anything otherwise is undermining that importer's ultra high ethical standards as well as roasting capability, no matter which camp of Coffee taste you're into. Unfortunately however, ILLY are great roasters too but their beans go stale way too soon (this part I agree with!) and local ILLY distributors don't seem to notice or realise the prime dates for their Coffee Cans before they should be discarded. Sometimes, if Epoch thinks about it deeply, how many people have really written positive things about your ILLY coffees? Nearly none. TO ME, EPOCH AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, HAS ON AVERAGE ONE OF THE BEST AND MORE TRUSTWORTHY TEAMS OF BARISTAS, AND I THINK THEIR SKILLS ARE BEING LET DOWN BY ILLY'S INCONSISTENT PERFORMANCES!

*As a side note, some coffee loving friend of mine once told me that some Runner-up Barista works for Epoch and I trusted him completely! But it seems like we were wrong after I found out more about it.... That's why you can never trust anyone else, including yourself! I wonder if their latest Calm or Crazy Pudding's name has anything to do with my mistake !

忙碌過後,已是下午三時許,不想吃飯,於是走到永豐街找找新意思。這條街小店甚多,Yo Mama,Pizza Express,喜宴等,最後選了這間 Epoch。這店主打是 Illy 咖啡,有冷有熱十多種飲法,玻璃櫃內陳列了多款很吸引的蛋糕,但未吃午餐,先要一個 Seared Tuna Salad 打底,略煎過的吞拿魚有四件,配上火箭菜,菠菜,還有車厘茄和幼芽菜,火箭菜獨有的芝麻味和苦味,令人感覺清新提神,菠菜葉青嫩,混了黑松露菌醋汁,可口怡人,唯黑松露菌味不明顯,吞拿魚不是即叫即煎的,已雪至冰凍,味道還可。甜品是這店的強項,琳瑯滿目的擺設吸引不到我,反而在櫃面的 pound cake 幾有住家 feel,每 1 cm 賣 $6,我選了 2 cm coffee pound cake 和一杯 Illy 咖啡。Coffee pound cake 完全沒有咖啡香味,有些合桃碎,不說還以為是合桃蛋糕,質地夠粗糙,味道不錯,略嫌圍邊的糖太甜,另一樣要彈的是那隻叉,約有八、九吋長,身重,把柄是圓身,兩頭轉,極難用來吃件蛋糕,Illy 咖啡跟有熱奶,糖要自取,咖啡味不及 Lavazza。店內音樂聲浪太大,

甜品是這店的強項,琳瑯滿目的擺設吸引不到我,反而在櫃面的 pound cake 幾有住家 feel,每 1 cm 賣 $6,我選了 2 cm coffee pound cake 和一杯 Illy 咖啡。Coffee pound cake 完全沒有咖啡香味,有些合桃碎,不說還以為是合桃蛋糕,質地夠粗糙,味道不錯,略嫌圍邊的糖太甜,另一樣要彈的是那隻叉,約有八、九吋長,身重,把柄是圓身,兩頭轉,極難用來吃件蛋糕,Illy 咖啡跟有熱奶,糖要自取,咖啡味不及 Lavazza。

店內音樂聲浪太大,不適合看書或與朋友交談,飲杯茶,吃件餅休息一會則不錯。

同學仔們在灣仔學日文會話己一年了. 在年終前來了一次tea time. 原來在灣仔除了哈比兔..這間也是我的常選 epoch . 也是一樣要了個doppio ,要了一小塊pound cake Doppio 是一種須要但不大會分別,今次的脂厚味甘..知道這是我喜的. 但有時是限這天的,有時同一間的同咖啡師的又會稀咗...還好有幾間是死極有個譜. 今天加多一塊乾果pound cake ...配得很好. 香香的不會甜,還有些焦香味但如果多一些甜奶油可能更好.

為了一試朋友推介的chocolate cake,於是專程來到灣仔一試ēpöch。星街小區的食肆其中一個共通點就是裝潢都十分好;好像這ēpöch,店內的裝修十分溫馨及又有特色,一進入已給它加了分。當然地就點了那出名的7-layer Valrhona Chocolate Cake。蛋糕的賣相十分精緻,在切面上已清楚看到不同的朱古力層次,可謂一絲不苟。蛋糕吃落的味道很豐富,軟硬適中,那陣朱古力的甜令人十分滿足,令人停不了下來。結果不消一會便清了碟。吃甜品,尤其是朱古力,還是配咖啡最好。點了杯意大利咖啡expresso。咖啡的香氣撲鼻,入口味道香濃,令人很relax。

I THINK this was the name... I think its a new product as its not on their website menu... I must say I did choose it because I love berries and the pink cake looked enticing. I asked one of the waiters what was inside, and he told me it was a yogurt mousse. I thought "sounds good" and said I'd take one.

First bite was just berries and cake so it was fine, nothing special. The pink is just from food colouring because it tasted like plain sponge cake. Then i got to the center, the sweetness was right...but something was wrong. I looked at the 'mousse' it had green bits...like herbs?! Then i tasted it again and this time i was sure it had herbs in it. I mean, it wasn't awful that I had to spit it out...it was edible but it was just very wrong. From the concept to the execution how did the pastry chef think herbs in a dessert would be good? And they were italian herbs - ones you would find in (savoury) foccacia or pasta.
The good points are that the berries were very fresh. I removed the 'mousse' and proceeded to finish the cake easily.

Berry Crumble Tart ($25?)
The tart was tiny. Like....comparable to the size of an egg tart but shorter/flatter. This was fine I guess seeing that they redeemed themselves by making them look appealing. However, on taste this was also quite a disappointment. Overall the taste itself was fine - sweet crumble, sour berry filling and a buttery crust but it fell on the texture. The crumble was not crumbly but a soft mess, easily dissolved in the mouth. The filling was fine except it just felt like a soft layer of tart jam. The bottom crust was the worst, as it was soft - the result of the filling being to 'wet' and since it was night it must've been sitting for hours and the liquid would've seeped through to the pastry base. They need to learn a little from Paul Lafayet because PL's version was the exact opposite!

All in all, a disappointing dessert experience. The place itself has a good concept and is very chill but they need to fix some of their cakes! I'm sure cheesecakes are good because they naturally hold well and taste better after hours of refrigeration but crumbles should be made fresh to order and their pastry base for their tarts were just bad.... Plus the finding of the herbs in the yogurt mousse is just wrong. I would come back for their dessert menu and perhaps savoury food, but no more weird cakes please!

喝的點了Espresso系及奶系的咖啡各一杯,分別是Ristretto及Café Latte,原來此店的咖啡師Ms. Tracy Kwok剛奪了零九年香港的咖啡師大賽冠軍,聽說還會到澳洲代表香港出賽,在此希望她會代香港爭光。

先談那杯Café Latte,也不用再次介紹Café Latte是什麼吧,用上了玻璃杯盛着的Café Latte,其咖啡層次看起來很是對版,面頭心形的拉花尚算精彩,嗅起來已經有點奶香及咖啡香,奶泡喝一口很滑,咖啡順喉而帶出一份咖啡的甘香,很好喝,咖啡滑溜的程度讓我幾近分不清這是Flat White還是Café Latte,因為真的很Creamy,好像連面層的Frothy點的泡也不見,但無論如何,都是挺好喝的,喝後有奶香的咖啡甘香留在口中,似乎這咖啡師的強項是弄奶系的咖啡吧。

之後又看看Ristretto如何,此處對Ristretto的介紹是用上二十毫升沖的特濃咖啡,而Espresso是用上三十毫升沖的特濃咖啡,是簡單而正確的描述,畢竟也不用將每個細節每樣因數也羅列出來,香港人沒有那麼多時間去看。咖啡以外觀來說,最奇怪的是杯子用上裝細Cappuccino的杯子來盛,Crema很薄,脂香嚴重不足,醇厚度及風味難免受到影響,以Illy偏高的烘焙度的豆來說,着實是較可惜,而咖啡濃度以Ristretto來說有點不夠,但入口及嗅起來也是很香而立體的,但味道方面就不太複雜,絕對不可以說是很差,但沒有Crema,似乎又沒有了喝Espresso及Ristretto的意義,可能每個人的口味也不同吧。

也算是挺全面的試了吃的及喝的了,吃的很普通,至於喝的,如果以她是香港咖啡師之冠來說,可能是我期望過高吧,感覺又不是那麼出奇的好,但畢竟還是一所不錯的咖啡店,只不過在個人心目中,值得再去的Café還有很多其他的呢。

We arrived at around 10am on Sat morning when it was still relatively quiet, so plenty of tables available. We had a big breakfast and eggs benedict with salmon - both were tasty. The breakfast did not come with coffee and we had to order separately. They serve illy coffee but I am not a big fan. It was an enjoyable breakfast although when the place gets busy it can be quite noisy. I wish they would consider including a coffee in their breakfast to make it better value for money.
