Once being seated, waitress introduced us the regular menu and the today’s special. 2 of us ordered their Oyster, Citrus-cured Salmon and Steak Tartar from the regular menu and Bone Marrow which is off menu as starters. And I told the waitress I would like to have Duck a l'Orange for the main but would like to delay the order after finishing our starters. The waitress kindly reminded us the duck would take 30mins to cook, and that's fine with us cause thats how we planned to have our dinner.

Once we were almost done with the starters, we began to order the main including the Squid Bolangnes and the most look forward Duck a l'Orange. However the same waitress told us there was no more Duck a l'Orange. We were very surprised and uncertain what she just told us as our dinner started at 6:30pm,  there is no way they run out of the dish knowing that there will be 1 or 2 more rounds of tables for their night. So I asked another waitress, she told us the fact that the kitchen wouldn't take the order because the dish would take 30mins to cook. I was stunned by the reason and suggested her to help check with the chef if he/she would kindly let us have the long awaited dish. I saw her went communicate with a chef (male, short hair with a pair of glasses), through the kitchen window I saw he shook his head and she returned telling us the chef refuse so.

By the end, due to the big disappointment, we cancelled other main dishes and told her to take us the bill. As we pay, she told us there is a minimum charge of $500 per person (we spent "only" $800 on the starters) but we refused to do so cause we were so disappointed with their arrangment and the way chef treating his long awaited customers.

Even though this place claim themselves a
hearty and friendly neighbood bistro. Their arrangment is nothing friendly and does not live up to its name. This confusion could be easily fixed by telling us if Duck a l'Orange must be ordered at the very beginning for the 30mins preperation. Also, they could have just serve us the dish after our express of disappointment after the mis-handling happened considering the long wait by the customer. With that being said, I do not recommand Jean May for the 2, 3 months of wait for the decent starters. This place lacks the care to their customers in its essences.

完全係為咗呢道鴨胸而黎!外皮煎得金黃帶焦香,但食落又唔算特別脆~ 鴨胸呈粉嫩嘅紅色,肉質軟腍有咬口,有肉味肉汁,唔會太韌太柴,不過就唔係我食過最嫩嘅鴨胸。旁邊嘅Carrot purée有驚喜喎!香甜軟滑,on top嘅紅蘿蔔軟綿到好似番薯!orange sauce微甜微酸帶香料味亦為呢道菜加左唔少分數~

這間位於灣仔的法國餐廳,一早已經見到有好多好評,但比較難訂位。所以很久都未有嘗試。今個星期約定朋友食飯,於是嘗試用電話發短訊詢問訂位情況,竟然好彩星期五可以訂到一張四人枱。預約時間來到餐廳,但也需要等候大概10分鐘左右。坐下開始睇菜單,菜單選擇不是很多。最後四個人點了不同菜式。小食及頭盤有Oyster, Chicken liver parfait, Shimeiji frits, Foie gras with smoke eels & prune terrine, Steak tartare and Citrus-cured salmon.主菜我點了Duck à l’orange,其他朋友點了是曰特別菜式Roast Lamb Rump。各樣菜式精美、味道好。可能是個人口味或者我個人覺得,菜式不太正宗,可是以這個價錢來說,尚算可以。全晚最出色的是Duck à l’orange,鴨胸煮得剛剛好,鴨肉嫩滑、橙味濃郁。如果只是去這間餐廳食這一道菜都值得。值得推薦!

各樣菜式精美、味道好。可能是個人口味或者我個人覺得,菜式不太正宗,可是以這個價錢來說,尚算可以。
全晚最出色的是Duck à l’orange,鴨胸煮得剛剛好,鴨肉嫩滑、橙味濃郁。如果只是去這間餐廳食這一道菜都值得。值得推薦!

jean may 的 corkage 為 $300,個人認為絕對值得。上次我們一拿出酒樽,服務員已經問是否要 burgundy 酒杯,可見餐館侍酒的知識並不馬虎。

今日不飲 Burgundy ,改飲波爾多右岸 Saint Émilion 的 Ausone 2004,在家早一小時開了瓶 breathe 一下。 男經理問我們是否要 decant,我們說不用了。Ausone 一啖果香洋溢,充盈著 plum 和 black fruits,然而酸度較高,有待開花。也有顯著的 minerals,丁點 peppery,有些 minty,tannin 很雅緻又不害羞。Finish 悠長回味。

【Snacks】
Chicken Liver Parfait, Red Onion Compote。Liver parfait 不過於濃厚也不膩,味道也很剔透(這是甚麼意思?你可以想像海很深,但是因為水清,可以望到深處的景色)。Parfait 畢竟不能單吃,仍需綠葉扶持。紅蔥漬的甜帶微酸 cut through 肝醬,還有把肝醬運送入口中的「載具」crostini。Crostini mini toasts —— 記住那是 vehicle ——載具不能喧賓奪主,味道切忌太濃太複雜,不然干擾 parfait 的味道,這裡的 crostini 委實合適「載具」。用 baguette 也無不可。這個餐前小吃,無需再挑剔 。 也許要講講,這裡的 baguettes 是常温的,在 bistros 也常見。

Oyster, Picked Cucumber, Horseradish, Dill。至於 Oysters,調味特別。小妹建議先聞一下牡蠣與青瓜漬混融之味,再連刁草和辣根一啖而吃,讓嗅覺擁抱整個菜式,繼而蠔與配料醬汁毫無保留地佔據你的吞頭,用英文講就係 savour the Gestalt 呢,誠然美味天成。聽聞 Saint Émilion 紅酒可襯白身魚,但小妹則不會吃蠔喝 Ausone 如此 sacrilegious 的啊。

Homemade Spaghetti, Clams, Chilli, Garlic。Pasta dish 好處是比較容易弄,壞處則很難煮得驚為天人。吃過最好的意大利麵不是在意大利,而是東京,可惜那家餐廳已經閉店。現在去代官山則必嚐 Aso 前面的 Caffe Michelangelo 呢。他們 casual 午餐有點料子,而且理性消費。而香港的 『八部半』8  1/2 嘛 (註:『八部半』為 Fellini 電影中譯),嗯,一次 pasta 竟然過了火(不過還是很美味既)。 Castellana 的 carbonara 則太炫技,過猶不及,中看不中吃。越走越遠了……

jean may 的 spaghetti dish,兩種 pastas,蜆肉、紅椒數片,灑上香草,義大利麵 al dente ,煮得完美(完美是基本,無用讚譽),也鮮味無比,雖則還未教人驚艷,誠然美味,小妹毫不猶豫一個人可以「清碟」,craveability 滿點 ,傳統的底藴賦以時代感,不應錯過。

Skate à la Grenobloise。無論網上如何「唱好」,很多人來說魔鬼魚肉味肉質賣相皆不甚討好(原因各式)。與其說魔鬼魚不好,不如說沒有找到適合的處理和烹調之法。 2018 年在 Gaddi’s 吃過一道菜 la raie poêlée sur une ėtuée de poireaux et pommes de terre, émulsion au beurre noisette (煎魔鬼魚、大蔥薯仔、榛子牛油汁),小妹認為定 skate 最夾 beurre noisette (hazelnut or brown butter) sauce(注:榛子牛油並沒有榛子,只係煮久了牛油變成咖啡色,又有堅果香味而已) 。

Á la Grenobloise 意思 of Grenoble,以法國東南城市為名,實為 brown butter, capers, lemon sauce 的菜式。魔鬼魚味道樸實,用 nutty brown butter 加檸檬汁,點綴以 capers,最能帶出魔鬼魚之好處。 正合我心。小妹覺得 jean may 用上大量汁蓋著魚身,味道豐富猶勝 Gaddi’s 只用 emulsion 。

回到 Ausone,這個時候,那支酒已經繁華競豔,是時候吃點肉去襯托一下。

Duck à l’orange。招牌主菜,風采依然,鴨胸完美無瑕,醬汁是日少了點橙味,多了些醬油汁的感覺,不然是滿分之作(詳細介紹也可參考之前食評)。

Iberico Pluma, Chimichurri 。西班牙伊比利亞豬的肩脊肉,cooked medium,佐以 green salad。Sauce 是 chimichurri 。豚肉甜美爽口,調味 spot on,沙律菜新鮮香脆。只係 chimichurri 缺了應有的「光彩」(單看上去不夠鮮綠), taste profile flat 了一點,而且 cumin 味道略為搶鏡,小妹視為小小瑕癖,僅此而已。

。L’Ami Louis 毀譽參半,有人話極好,有人嗤之以鼻,有興趣去巴黎時一試啦。一比之下,jean may 的價錢還是可以的。何況烤得如此恰到好處,焦香沒有過火,吃到菜香而沒草青,怎樣也是值得的了吧?

Pavolva, Apricots, Yoghurt Chantilly, Pistachio and Mint,這個甜品有甜的部份,又淡的部份,有果香,又堅果口感,又有薄荷清新,所以如果不一齊吃,有如「瞎子摸象」,單吃 pavlova 太甜,只嚐 Chantilly cream 又會過淡。但整體一起是個美麗的甜點。

I ordered the duck and strawberry pavlova. The duck was too salty and nothing special - not sure what people rave about. Costing $3xx, I truly enjoy eating Peking duck more than the duck here.

I thought the dessert could redeem the restaurant’s reputation but it was also a let down. Average at best. The pavlova was more like a meringue rather than proper pavlova. It was not chewy in the inside as it should be.

Would not come again.
