If you read the paper table mat, then you will know more about the story of Mrs. Pound. Basically about a beautiful famous dancer who didnt do so well in her dancing career but met the rich guy who gave her money to open a bar. HAHAHA that how most romantic stories go.

I forgot names of the drinks.
The teacup one is English Breakfast Tea mixed with Vodka. It is served in the so old styled tea cup for people's birthday. With the 果皮floating on top of the drink, this drink is quite strong
I feel like having the herbal tea. The other drink is a spicy hot one, my tongue is on fire. In between you can taste the sweetness of the honey. The Chinese element will be the 話梅plum to sweeten u up. Sweet and Spicy, quite an interesting cocktail.

Decoration of the bar is interesting, with like ballet shoes mirror on the wall. The storefront is like a stamp shop with an automatic door that takes you back to the old age where people socialize
Quite an enjoyable experience!

I walked by Mrs Pound yesterday, and though it was a pretty interesting shop. The outside is  made out to be like a  stamp shop, whilst the inside is a proper restaurant.  All I have to say is that it was  the worst decision I've made in a very long time. For the quality and quantity of food served, it was highly overpriced and it  did not taste good.  In other words, I completely DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant. The food selection is poor (only 4 a la carte options for lunch, and no set lunch)

For the quality and quantity of food served, it was highly overpriced and it  did not taste good.  In other words, I completely DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant. The food selection is poor (only 4 a la carte options for lunch, and no set lunch) and entirely overpriced, the service was slow, and the waiters messed up my order; all in all, it was just a terrible experience.
It's not I won't be going  back soon - it's I will never be going back ever again.
Save your money, go to Pret and order a sandwich, it will taste much better, be much cheaper, and you will enjoy the experience way more.

We decided to splurge on the Crab Mac and and Cheese which was $350+  so again our expectations were high. Again it came in a tiny bowl and wasn't anything special. We have two cocktails, 4 beers, 1 starter and 3 maints and the bill came to $1700+. We left feeling ripped off and will never go back. With so many amazing options in HK at such better value, I would give this place a miss unless you just want to stop by for a drink.

No apologise at all. She only said "oh I threw it away". What a waste of food and bad and irresponsible service. Will not be back anymore and would not recommend to any of our friends. Not worth the price for that service.

Literally love this place. The friendly staff, the variety of food. I've been here a few times, and the food is just really good.Expect fusion between Asian and Western. The quality of products used are good, so no matter what kitchen, it'll be fine. My personal favourites are the redang poutine fries, lemongrass pork balls and the pork neck. Good cocktails, great place for a night out with friends.

[Note to reader: this is one part of my 8-part review series on the Ultimate Sandwich Competition. Here’s a description of the contest: “Crave Magazine is partnering with The Forks & Spoons and online dining platform in search of Hong Kong’s best gourmet sandwiches. Eight of the city’s beloved delis and restaurants will battle it out to show us what they’ve got with their prized carby goodness, from classic Reubens to the reimagined Banh Mi.” I decided to hold my own (completely unofficial) contest, eating all the sandwiches and ranking them.

Rules: I just made up these rules, but I abided by them throughout the contest. Rule #1: Only one sandwich can be crowned The Ultimate Sandwich, and it must be one of the eight entrants. While Crave magazine is giving the award based on sales, my award is completely subjective, based on my own opinion. Rule #2: I must eat the sandwich exactly the way the restaurant serves it, with no additions or subtractions (unless they’re explicitly offered as a choice point): no sauces from the table, no salt, no pepper, nothing. Rule #3: Only The Ultimate Sandwich deserves a smiley-face review. If a restaurant pretends it has The Ultimate Sandwich, but then just has a regular old sandwich, then that restaurant is ipso facto only OK at best, and perhaps frowny-face at worst.]

Beef Bourguignon Banh Mi

Beef Bourguignon - Beef Short Rib / Rib, bacon, bouquet garni, onions, olive oil, Burgundy wine,

oyster sauce

Banh Mi – Chicken Liver Pate, baguette, pickled carrots, cucumber, chilli,

cilantro

HK$120

After my failed first attempt to join The Ultimate Sandwich competition, I made a second go at Mrs. Pound. This time, I called ahead, and the person answering the phone assured me that they were indeed serving the beef bourguignon banh mi, even though it was Saturday and they have a special weekend brunch menu.

When I arrived, as you can see, the sandwich was clearly listed on the specials menu, and I ordered it, as well as a lychee spritzer. Let’s get right to the sandwich.

First off, there were a few seeming discrepancies between the sandwich description on Crave magazine’s website and the sandwich I got. As you can see from the pictures, there doesn’t appear to be any chicken liver pate spread on the bread, and I certainly didn’t taste or otherwise notice any. Second, there wasn’t any chilli, and the cilantro was mostly cilantro stems and not cilantro leaves. Definite loss of points there. Additionally, I believe it was not just pickled carrots, but also pickled daikon, which is better. I could be mistaken, but it certainly seemed and looked like daikon. Perhaps next time I shall have the server explain the sandwich to me.

(I should be clear that Crave magazine represented this as the sandwich ingredients, but nothing at Mrs. Pound said anything about the sandwich other than “Bourguignon Banh Mi - $120.”)

The beef was reasonably soft and tender but still with a good meatiness, and a nice overall flavor. Muscle is connected to the ribs by a chewy thingy (sorry, I’m not an anatomist) and I got some chewy bits that weren’t terribly unpleasant, but wouldn’t have shown up in a more traditional stewing cut. My pictures are (alas) a little misleading, in that they make it seem like there’s more beef than there really is. I’m not complaining that there is too little food, but trying to paint a realistic picture of the sandwich: the stew laid out at the top of the picture is pretty much all that’s in there. I do wish there was more beef, and I wish there was more sauce, because frankly, beef bourguignon is delicious, and putting it on a crusty baguette as a sandwich is a great idea. But my bread was mostly just dry baguette, not soggy-with-stew baguette, and that was a little disappointing, given the promise. I didn’t notice any onion, and the oyster sauce was also beyond the refinement of my palate to detect.

The pickled vegetables were plentiful, which is good, and on the sweet side. A bit sweeter than I’d like, perhaps, but fine. The shredded cucumber was a nice touch, but there wasn’t much of it. The cilantro stems were annoying. The sandwich was a bit dry: as I said, there wasn’t much sauce from the stew, no pate that I could see, no mayo, and no Sriracha. And, I’m pretty sure Sriracha would have worked, and that’s because the sandwich wasn’t really as much a marriage of two things, as a juxtaposition of them. The beef bourguignon sat on one side, and crusty bread and stew works great together, and the other fixings mainly got squeezed to the other side, and were sort of like a vegetable banh mi, without any of the Vietnamese pork and pate. It struck me as more lazy fusion than actually a genius combination of two existing dishes.

So was this The Ultimate Sandwich? I’m afraid not, though it squeaks into the top half at #4. I like the stew on a sandwich idea, but this particular stew on a banh mi didn’t work for me. Additionally, the banh mi elements were a little weak. The carrots, daikon, and cucumber were spot-on, but the missing pate, lack of sauce, lack of spice, and bizarre decision to not pick the leaves off the cilantro before throwing them on suggested to me that whoever was making this sandwich wasn’t actually trying to make The Ultimate Sandwich, and was perhaps phoning Saturday in a little.

(Highly Unofficial) Ultimate Sandwich Competition Results:

1. ***WINNER*** Bulgogi Roast Beef Sandwich – Jinjuu

2. Steak in Knead – Knead

3. Ultimate Smoked Pastrami & Cheese – Morty’s Delicatessen

4. Beef Bourguignon Banh Mi - Mrs. Pound

5. The Gentleman’s Sandwich – Beef & Liberty

6. Shanghai Dip – Second Draft

7. [Did not show] – Posto Pubblico

8. HA HA Piss Off! – Bread & Beast

Hiding inconspicuously behind a Chinese stamp shop along Sheung Wan‘s Pound Lane, that is Mrs. Pound consists of tall chairs at the bar, neon signage, movie star mirrors hanging up high and make-up compacts, silver chopsticks on the fuchsia wall. During the late afternoon, the restaurant serves only small dishes, so we opt for a bowl of avocado fries. It is seriously unique, coated with amazingly crunchy panko breadcrumbs, whilst is drizzled with honey for extra flavor. The sriracha mayo on the side is very much a perfect match!

Another dish we have is the poutine fries with beef rendang, which is absolutely fantastic. It is basically shredded beef brisket cooked in an intense and vibrant spicy sauce, baked over the potato fries with some melted mozzarella and spring onion to finish.

Without a doubt, I will definitely return for more incredible fusion food, the signature Mrs. Pound’s rendang bao in particular; and I appreciate the staff who attempt to lend me an USB cable to charge my iPhone, haha.

The host told us to just shove our way in to the bar and order from the bartenders. I would expect that from a dive bar, but not a 'speakeasy' restaurant/bar. The theme is awesome and fun, but the main door was probably the highlight of the experience.

After getting a spot at the bar, looked the at drink menu and quickly ordered our drinks. The drink menu is pretty cool. They have a lot of specialty spirits and craft cocktails.

I ordered the Hemingway and my boyfriend got a Gin & Tonic. The G&T came fairly quickly. The Hemingway took a while. I watched the bartender make it. He seemed very sloppy, but more in a geeky way than a bad way. After he poured the cocktail into a glass, he took a sip from the shaker!!! First off, shouldn't he taste the drink before pouring it? Second, I've never seen a bartender drink from the actual shaker!!! I hope they wash those shakers well.... Anyway, my drink was good.

But the restaurant was getting packed and people were shoving their way to the bar near us to order a drink. Wasn't a fun experience, but not horrible either. Probably due to my high expectations, I thought it just would have been a lot cooler.

Let me preface this by saying that in 9 years of living in Hong Kong and eating out 3-4 times a week, I never had a reason to join Open Rice and leave a review. Until I came here. I was curious to know how a restaurant as trendy as Mrs Pound could be half empty for dinner. Then I understood. The secret entrance is very cool and to be honest, sets the expectations for a very cool place indoors. The decor? Fun. The food? Completely overpriced and quality was poor compared to any dai pai dong on the street. I should have known when I noticed food left on everyone's plate across the restaurant. We ordered nonetheless. Chicken meatball ($45) bleh, MSG laden squid ($158) that was no better than what you'd get at the North Point market, flank steak ($158) that looked like it had been sitting out and microwaved before service, and a salad ($128) dressed with nothing more than lemon. My friend wanted to order the flank steak because she never had steak with rasperries before. There's a reason why. We're not picky - I swear. But we were so sad we stopped eating, got the bill and went to ABC Kitchen for dessert and a glass of wine to get over it.

(PS - Dessert (pavlova $58, lemon meringue $48, pistachio souffle $48), 2 glasses of red wine $38 and a port $68 at ABC Kitchen came out to just HK$298). And their service is bar none. Hence my #2 review which will be for ABC Kitchen.
