Always been an avid fan of Ronin and I’m just as much of a fan of its revamped concept. It is now Japanese tapas style bites with an ever extensive drinks list. What I love is that for non alcohol consuming patrons, there are delicious mocktails on offer and I am not forced to order just a boring soda water. Food wise, there are cute plays on traditionally western food but with a Japanese twist such as the smoked beer battered Amadai with kewpie mayo which was reminiscent of good old fish and chips. Other favourites included pizza stuffed wings (you heard right), meaty mozzarella, pepperoni and olives stuffed into a pizza wing, and Sanma Pike Mackerel accompanied by a fennel and red onion pickled salad. The oysters are always fresh and the crunchy monaka was perfectly juxtaposed against the softness of the sea urchin and tender scallops. The dessert of sweet potato mochi donut is a must order and this time round, it was carrot flavoured with a cinnamon sprinkle, which tasted like autumn 😍

Dinner. Westernized izakaya. PickyEater was surprised that I’ve never been, considering it was one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants a long time ago. Newly renovated, but apparently layout remained the same, with two rows of back-to-back bar seats in a narrow space.Loud music playing.Didn’t like the wine list. Went for a glass of Chardonnay that gave me a headache after. PickyEater was on detox. Here’s what we had.Appetizers: Cherry tomatoes. Very refreshing.Dry Aged Threadfin Bream with Cilantro.Mandarin miso as sauce.Smoked Beer Battered Amadai. Kewpie mayonnaise with maple. Came with 2 shots of black beer. Quite an interesting idea- too bad we weren’t really beer fans.Tokyo Turnip with Chorizo in Garlic Miso. Chorizo was surprisingly not spicy; didn’t like the turnip tho- too bitter and slightly peppery.Grilled smoked Yellowtail Collar.Skewer of Pork Belly stuffed with Japanese ginger. Similar sweetish marinade as the collar. Passed on Dessert, as the only available option was the sweet potato. In summary: everything tasted similar with strong flavors, probably best for those ordering loads of drinks. Not good for groups more than 2 tho, difficult to chat with the narrow bar seating.
