Came here for lunch with boyfriend as he wanted "authentic" Japanese. Um...ok. Ootoya is huge chain from Japan. Considered in the group of family restaurants, they serve everything very typical Japanese with a cost effective price range. And in Hong Kong ... I always find this place consistent. Not great but at least not unpleasant.During lunch time, they have a lunch menu. Menu is in English and Chinese. You can upgrade by adding money for a drink. But otherwise, tea is free.I had the cold sob

I had the cold soba and mini chicken and egg don ($90). There is a choice of udon but I prefer cold soba. It came with an appetizer of very sad looking pickled lettuce that didn't have much pickled flavor. The chicken and egg don was said to be mini but it was a lot larger than I had expected so boyfriend helped me eat most of it. But it tasted quite good. The cold soba was smooth and the dipping sauce wasn't too salty.
Boyfriend had the sukiyaki set ($98). It came with a bowl of rice, miso soup and the same appetizer I had. It oddly didn't have a raw egg to crack into. The soup was extremely sweet. It tasted more like sugar syrup. There was quite a bit of items in it: mushrooms, leeks, beef strips and what seemed like a soft piece of fish tofu? Unsure. It was ok but the I felt the soup was just way too sweet.
Food was ok. Not great but yes, not unpleasant. Though the appetizer was definitely sad.
