The place has been around for quite a while. This is perhaps our Chinese equivalent of "上舖大牌檔", a small eatery which you can find in every neighbourhood, and serve some more "down-to-earth" versions of restaurant quality food. Grandma food? I can't tell for sure, though it is definitely a homely place where you can enjoy cheap, fresh and hearty Japanese cuisine just wearing T-shirts and slippers.I have never been there for drinks and dinner though, I am sure the place will serve these purposes
There is no shortage of choices for lunch set and people with "selection phobia" should be forewarned. I am very faithful to this dish of fried oysters ($65 for 4 pieces) simply because it is cooked perfectly and the oysters are always fresh. I can see that this daily lunch set ($120 if I remember correctly) is very popular among Japanese customers. Perhaps the flavour and the food choices really remind them of home. Sushi set (matsu) is the lunch set I order almost every time - the most expensive set on the lunch menu. This makes me feel pampered if not too luxurious.
For $160 one gets sushi with uni and ikura (salmon fish roe). The sashimi is not of top quality let's be honest, but it is always fresh and never limp, and it will not be fair to compare them with those of specialised sushi places . The portion is big and the place really makes sure that every one who goes there is well fed. Chirashi sushi is another one of my favourite. The set emphasizes the inclusion of 牡丹蝦 (spot prawn), and the botan ebi is well deserved to be the spotlight of the set. The tasty and delicate 玉子焼き (Japanese omelette) in a way highlights the skill of the Japanese chef. Homey feeling is returned with the sides. The 茶碗蒸し (steamed egg) tastes simple yet not simple - flavours of everything in the bowl is direct, natural and melted nicely together. Another version of the sushi set. I always request no salmon. The set ends with a mini mochi ice. Nothing fancy about this place, but it keeps luring me back, just like home.
