As ramen lovers, our interest piqued when we heard that there had been a Michelin star ramen place open in HK. We decided to give it a try after watching some good reviews on how this branch was comparable to the ones in Japan, though frankly after trying it out for ourselves, we simply thought it was not worth its high price tag. We ordered 2 of their signature ramens, which were priced at $128 each, not including 10% service charge. After service charge, this bowl of small ramen costed a whopp
We ordered 2 of their signature ramens, which were priced at $128 each, not including 10% service charge. After service charge, this bowl of small ramen costed a whopping ~$140 each. The saddest part is that you can not add extra noodles, which means any broth you have left over will go to waste.
1. Shio Hamaguri Soup Ramen
- This was the better of the two. There was a fresh clam taste, mixed with a good portion of white truffle oil. Whilst the broth was incredibly strong and flavourful, it did not leave you feeling stripped and thirsty, unlike the Shoyo one.
- The noodles were average at best, and honestly a bit too overcooked in my opinion. They were slightly soft and mushy, and you could not pick the tenderness of the ramen. The charsiu was very disappointing, and to be honest, quite dry and flavourless. Tasted like simple boiled pork placed in a nice broth. Not at all what I expected from a Michelin star place.
2. Shoyu Hamaguri soup Ramen
- Too salty. Initially, when you take the first few sips, you'd think wow this broth is so strong and flavourful, but after mixing the truffle oil with it, you realize the truffle flavour is too overpowering, and the overall broth is too salty and leaves you feeling very thirsty by the end of your meal. Though both are savory, the shio hamaguri ramen definitely has a fresher saltiness to it.
- Char siu was again, very disappointing
- Noodles were average at best; would've preferred noodles with a stronger earthy taste to balance out the saltiness of the broth
Overall, very overhyped place, not worth this high price tag. The broth was amazing, but noodles and the pork char siu was very disappointing. There are many similar other options with a much lower price.
