I love cha chan tengs and I love coffee. I knew it would be gimmicky. I knew it would be all about the gram. But I really really love cha chan tengs so this was a gimmick I knew I would fall or. No shame and no regrets!I visited 大安茶冰廳 on a weekday so it was pretty empty. First impressions - wow, they've really tried to keep the original vibe and decor, which I appreciate. They've redone the place a little to give it a clean and new look without sacrificing the original design or decor (at least that's my guess - I've never been to the original cha chan teng).

While I was tempted to try their special drinks like the Horlick Coffee, I'm usually more of a black coffee drinker. I ordered myself an Americano ($32), with a 0T (Lemon Tea) Cookie ($40) and a Caramel Egg Tart ($36). The coffee was decent - I spotted coffee bags from idealogy, a reputable local cafe and roastery, so I knew the coffee would be good.

Between the two desserts that I ordered, I have to say I was more impressed by the 0T Cookie. First of all, it's huge - best to share it with someone (I ended up packing half of it home). Secondly, the lemon tea flavour was very pronounced, which is an impressive feat. Lemon is a flavour that can be hard to nail, especially in cookies. The 0T cookie is absolutely delicious and well worth $40.

On the other hand, the Caramel Egg Tart was good, but honestly I'd rather just get an egg tart from the local bakeries for a fraction of the price. However I must give credit where its due, and I must admit I was surprised by the caramel that oozes out of the tart. It did make me quite giddy and excited, only because I wasn't expecting it at all and I do love caramel. Whether the caramel elevates the egg tart or is necessary at all... well, that I think you have to decide for yourself...

Because it's so faithful to their cha chan teng theme, this cafe may not be the most ideal for studying or sitting for long periods of time. Don't get me wrong, the place is perfectly clean and I'm sure the staff wouldn't mind, but I honestly can't imagine anyone taking their laptop out to study at a place like this. I guess it's just something about the vibe. Maybe that's just me!
