As usual, I started with an order of a fresh young coconut, which - in this case, was again of perfect age, meaning that the flesh was still very translucent and jellylike, making the water extremely thirst-quenching and healthy. (The properties of this drink change with the maturity of the coconut. Sadly, most other diners in HK serve coconuts that are way too old, with hard flesh and coconut water that already lost most its original health benefits...)

I ordered my favourite salad, the chicken salad with crunchy vegetable. It is always a delight and everytime I eat it, I think to myself: How could I have forgotten how wonderful this is and why don't I come here more often?! The vegetable is so finely shredded that it is like a crazy birds nest and it is laced with crunchy bits of fried shallot and gently poached chicken that has been hand-pulled. The salad has a Vietnamese dressing with delicious punctuation of lemon and a sweet note that is highly addictive.

Since I wanted to try something new, I also ordered the Turmeric grilled Vietnamese fish, which came on a bed of steamed rice noodles. How glad I am to have ordered this. Another perfect dish that I was truly delighted with: The fish was grilled to have a slightly crispy skin while the inside was succulently moist and perfectly shiny, just how I like it. I'm not sure what type of fish it was but it reminded me of my favourite black cod. The fresh dill herb was the ideal condiment for this dish and the noodles added extra texture and held the lovely juices from the fish.

Again, I am amazed by this wonderful little diner. Wish I could go more often and pray that one day they'll open a branch near my home... Love it!

The broth was lovely and strong with rich tomato and crab taste but it was a bit too salty.
There were cubes of meat made from minced prawn and crab roe which was just like eating crab.
Surprisingly, I liked the noodles because they were similar to rice vermicelli but slightly thicker and did not have that Yunnan vermicelli plastic chewy texture.

I visit Noodlemi every week. I probably keep them in business. It's a small space, but things are clean, and the staff is polite. I don't think I've ever seen it empty, and there are always a few people standing outside waiting for their takeaway orders.I would recommend: beef pho, pork summer rolls, shredded chicken salad, and the pork neck vermicelli. I would recommend: beef pho, pork summer rolls, shredded chicken salad, and the pork neck vermicelli. I would not recommend their spring rolls as they come out soggy. You can order a side of soup (around $35 HKD) if you so desire. I don't think that's an option at other pho restaurants.

I choose Noodlemi over other pho restaurants in Sheung Wan (such as Pho 26 and Pho Tai) because their broth is flavorsome and they succeed in making fresh, simple food. The other pho restaurants don't taste as bright and homey; they taste watered-down and bland. 

Some people complain that their broth doesn't taste "authentic," but that's a matter of personal taste. You'll get that kind of complaint at every pho restaurant. Everyone cooks their pho a little differently, so it's okay if their taste profile doesn't match up with yours.

The beef pho is a must. Extremely tender beef together with a nice mixture of tasty seasoning plus vegetables (mainly bean sprouts). All of this in a delicious light broth, added with a good amount of soft rice noodles, makes the entire meal addictive. Was invited by a friend there for lunch. We arranged to eat at 2:15, so avoided the lunch rush and were able to be seated immediately. Noodlemi is a small space, so it's probably best to avoid peak dining hours. Service was fast and I was handed a menu as soon as I walked in. There were lot's of choices on the menu, so my friends and I ordered a selection of dishes to try: crispy chicken rolls, turmeric fish bun, crab and tomato noodles and papaya salad w pork. 
 All the dishes were consistently good, but the two dishes that really stood out were the turmeric fish bun and the crab and tomato noodles. The fish was fried perfectly, w a layer of tuemeric surrounding the flesh. The heat and flavour of the fish complemented the cold noodles and shredded vegetables. The crab and tomato noodles (bun rieu) are one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes, and Noodlemi is the only other place I've found in HK that serves them, excepting Nha Trang. In comparision with Nha Trang, the broth was a lot fresher and did not leave behind a strong aftertaste. All the dishes at Noodlemi are made without MSG and the freshness of the broth really comes through. 
Portion sizes are generous and despite that, my friend and I still managed to polish everything off and still managed to make some room for dessert. We had a pannacotta, which is made freshly everyday. I am not a big fan of desserts without chocolate, but the pannacotta was delicious. It's served in a cute little jar and topped with a tangy berry sauce and dotted with rasperries, strawberries and blueberries. 
Conclusion: Noodlemi is a restaurant I definitely plan to return to, and it is easy to see why it is so popular.

一早已到上環午餐, 以為早一點避開人潮, 但食午餐的人沒有最早, 只有更早, 文咸東街已有人群於門前, 大部分是老外, 幸好他們都是外賣, 這間店就是吃越南菜的noodlemi, 記得以前也來過, 也是吃越南法飽, 但人沒有那麼多, 可能轉了手, 裝修不同了, 座位多了, 但迫了許多, 食物也多了選擇, 我先來一個越南滴滴咖啡, 好香好濃, 不錯! 再來一個雞肉越南法飽, 裡面有許多紅蘿蔔, 辣椒, 生菜和香菜, 雞肉不太硬, 配合醬汁酸酸地, 好清新好醒胃, 下次可以試一試蔥油豬頸肉越南法飽!朋友吃了一個蕃茄蝦蟹湯檬, 顏色好深好像用許多材料煲出來的湯底, 但麵裡沒有蝦蟹, 只有肉碎和豆乾, 莫非蝦蟹是用來製湯? 味道尚可, 仍有進步的空間!

跟着呷一口湯,先是感受到鹹味,接着便是有一點點酸....來到這步就僅此而已....湯本應有的牛骨香及鮮甜,是付之如蕨....

再試牛肉,是淡而無味的;質地亦屬偏韌但未至於有渣,只能說是僅僅合格....

最後是那口粉,樣子比起普通的河粉幼身了一點,但米香是欠奉的,韌度亦一般....

懷着盛興而來,但卻是失望而回....相信那三文治亦應不怎麼樣,還是放棄好了....
縱然經歷了無數次的失敗,但自己仍有信心在未來的日子,會在香港吃到一碗似樣點的pho吧....

七月三日 (星期三)  在上環文咸東街的「noodlemi」,每逢午市也總擠滿等位之食客,每次見狀也有一探究竟的衝動是日機會來喇,午市特意提早出門,十二點半前到,約等十分鐘便有枱店子小小,老實說,座位實在有點迫夾,幸好冷氣還算充足,地方也十分整潔企理 先給這碗名字長長的「螃蟹&蝦湯蕃茄檬粉 螃蟹和蝦湯配蕃茄豆腐檬粉」吸引着是否印刷有誤不得而知,簡單一點,就叫「蟹湯豆腐湯檬」吧!而架架妹在炎炎夏日,當然想吃個較為涼快的撈檬蟹湯豆腐湯檬湯底的確散發着香濃的海鮮香氣如其名,主要材料就是螃蟹和蝦,你會感受到濃烈的蝦蟹殼的味道,可謂用料十足這裡的檬粉倒有點像米粉,較粗身也較煙韌配料是新鮮蕃茄配以數粒炸豆腐,對男生而言,可能會寡了點換個角度,既有蕃茄的酸酸甜甜,又有炸豆腐的少少惹味,你又會覺得挺清新健康湯底是全吸引你不斷喝的那種,不知不覺,也喝了大半碗!香茅豬扒撈檬香茅切成條狀,較易入口豬扒肉質彈牙美味,香茅味十足撈檬卻不夠凍,帶着餘温魚露味道鮮香,加回一點分數吧店子內最多竟然是老外,看來這裡已吸引到一班忠實粉絲喇!

湯底的確散發着香濃的海鮮香氣
如其名,主要材料就是螃蟹和蝦,你會感受到濃烈的蝦蟹殼的味道,可謂用料十足
這裡的檬粉倒有點像米粉,較粗身也較煙韌
配料是新鮮蕃茄配以數粒炸豆腐,對男生而言,可能會寡了點
換個角度,既有蕃茄的酸酸甜甜,又有炸豆腐的少少惹味,你又會覺得挺清新健康
湯底是全吸引你不斷喝的那種,不知不覺,也喝了大半碗!

已經有一陣子沒有和這位好友吃飯,原因是大家都忙,她做市場策劃的,經常都要超時工作,收工時間不穩定,所以她也很久沒有約朋友吃晚飯,剛好今晚我有空,所以我就等她下班,最後得到上天眷顧,等到差不多八點半我們就可以去吃飯了。本來她是想去吃某間意大利餐廳,不過那家餐廳九點半就關門,時間有點趕,只好轉移陣地,她就提議去吃越南菜。其實這家越南小店我一直都想試,但近來都比較少機會到上環,既然她提議去,我當然舉腳贊成。這家店很小,只有十多個座位,座位之間有點擠,而且都是挺重的高腳椅,坐得有點不太舒服。友人之前來過一次,吃什麼就由她拍板,而我就只想點一個青木瓜沙律。青木瓜沙律可以自選配料,我要了豬頸肉($58)。沙律份量不少,難怪有些外國人淨點一份做晚餐。豬頸肉有點乾,燒得有點焦,肉質不夠軟腍,但幸好未算是嚡口。青木瓜切得頗粗身,口感爽脆,一開頭始吃還不錯,感覺很清新,不過越吃就越覺得那個醬汁偏甜,開始有點漏。螃蟹和蝦湯配蕃茄豆腐檬粉($68)。朋友嫌這個米粉只有豆卜做配料,但其實這個粉主要是喝那個蕃茄蟹湯。湯頭味道濃郁,蟹肉味不算很突出,反而蕃茄湯本身不錯,而且裡面有煮腍了的蕃茄肉,所以如果你期望裡面有

青木瓜沙律可以自選配料,我要了豬頸肉($58)。沙律份量不少,難怪有些外國人淨點一份做晚餐。豬頸肉有點乾,燒得有點焦,肉質不夠軟腍,但幸好未算是嚡口。青木瓜切得頗粗身,口感爽脆,一開頭始吃還不錯,感覺很清新,不過越吃就越覺得那個醬汁偏甜,開始有點漏。

螃蟹和蝦湯配蕃茄豆腐檬粉($68)。朋友嫌這個米粉只有豆卜做配料,但其實這個粉主要是喝那個蕃茄蟹湯。湯頭味道濃郁,蟹肉味不算很突出,反而蕃茄湯本身不錯,而且裡面有煮腍了的蕃茄肉,所以如果你期望裡面有蟹肉的話,你肯定會失望。

軟殼蟹紙米卷($65)。紙米卷包得挺扎實,裡面有軟殼蟹、牛油果、青瓜紅蘿蔔絲等等,醮一些酸辣汁同吃,口感豐富,味道清新,也吃到啖啖軟殼蟹肉,好好吃呢。

這家店是由一個越南人和一個法國人一起開的,所以食物整體來說都是西式越南菜風格,而來光顧的客人大部份都是外國人。總括來說味道算不錯,但相比之下我還是喜歡地道一點的越南菜,就像前天尖沙咀那家就比較對味咯,不過友人讚這裡的越式法包好吃,或者下一次會來買個外賣法包試試看。

With seating only for around 12 people, you'll want to get there before 12:15 or after 1 pm.The beef pho was tasty with a generous portion of beef and tasty stock. The beef pho was tasty with a generous portion of beef and tasty stock. For those used to other Vietnamese places, the lack of MSG is apparent in that the stock isn't as "sweet". If you like noodle stock tasting like what you'd make at home, this is the place to come. Otherwise, there's Pho Tai across the street.

The lemongrass chicken banh mi was tasty, but not particularly traditional and not a very large portion either. The chicken had a touch of lemongrass flavor and was tender to eat. I think it could have used more pickled vegetables, but not bad overall.

At ~55 HKD per dish, Noodlemi is a bit pricey for Sheung Wan, especially given the relatively light portion sizes. I recommend that 2 people order 2 mains + a starter.

今晚同兩位食友試試這間鬼佬式的越南餐廳,也想不到米紙軟殼蟹卷包紮得也不錯,米紙不乾,香口軟殼蟹配上牛油果,fusion得來也簡單可口,是稱職的開心小吃。不過,我在越南是未見過加入軟殼蟹的米紙卷的哈哈!Happy Easter!

法包經烤焗後,散發出一點點微溫及香氣。從側面觀看,餡料清晰可見,有青瓜、紅燈籠椒絲、白蘿蔔絲、紅蘿蔔絲及扎肉。

打開後,發現餡料還有香菜。"阿十" 對烤得香脆,內層柔軟兼富彈性的麵包,感覺良好。至於餡料卻太偏重於酸味了,可能所選用的扎肉較為淡口,香草味道又不足,令醋醃的紅、白蘿蔔之酸味更形突出,因而缺乏了越式三文治的應有的味覺層次,還是未能跟越南地道的三文治相提並論。

看來 "阿十" 對越式三文治的思念,只好寄望下一趟越南之旅。

看來 "阿十" 對越南的想念,又豈止於越式三文治,還能在一杯越南滴滴咖啡中體現出來。

簡樸、不花巧的玻璃杯,底部盛載著乳白的煉奶,深黑的咖啡從頂部的金屬滴漏器慢慢滲濾出來,仿如小露珠由葉片墜下,從容不迫,剛好與繁忙的城市節奏成了反比。滴滴咖啡具深沉獨特的咖啡香,與煉奶交融後,譜出濃醇、獨一無二的咖啡韻味。切記要趁熱品嚐才不失風味!

加入了酸魚露後,開始逐一品嚐。魚柳頗為厚身,不像一般的 Cat Fish。咬開後,魚肉呈明顯的紋路,雖然不含魚味,但質感嫩滑,加上柔和自然的黃薑調味,這個魚柳越味不濃,多了點 Fushion 的感覺,但不失美味!

與 "阿十" 同分享,她也覺魚柳味道不錯。

至於檬粉則過份腍軟了,相信我還未到無牙婆婆的階段,還能咀嚼及享受富有米香及彈性的檬粉。味道方面,較為淡薄,建議可多放蔥油,加上炸蒜片,這樣與酸魚露配合,味道應可更為突出與美味!

Noodlemi 也設有 Happy Hour,三五知己下班後在越式餐廳內暢飲,會否變出越色生香!

在越南旅遊時,經常有機會光顧位處路旁的小店,特別喜愛戶外的座位,一邊閒聊、一邊留意街上的人與物,最深刻的要算是馬路上未見其影先聞其聲的電單車,越南面貌特色之一!Noodlemi 窗外的文咸東街鮮有電單車經過,不過也令我想起越南城市的景象。

Noodlemi, a small restaurant serving MSG-free, wheat-free and gluten-free Vietnamese cuisine is our solution. Conveniently located on Bonham Strand, this new, non-fussy eatery is a popular haunt for Hong Kong's increasingly health conscious office crowd.

Helmed by Duyen Hackett (previously running the Vietnamese restaurant Song) and French-Korean Jeremie Gougenheim, Noodlemi offers a delightful selection of Pho, baguettes and other snacks in a bright, clean setting. With an upbeat and lively vibe and quick and assured service, you would be very tempted to sit down for a casual meal to catch up with friends, but in fact, customers are as fond of buying takeaway as they are of eating in. After all, how often do you find a restaurant that offers a healthy and tasty lunch to-go at an affordable price?

Noodlemi 是一間完全不用味精的新派越南餐廳。食物款式不算太多但菜式清新,健康又美味,絕對是上環吃輕便午餐或買外賣的好地方!

(1) We started off with the Steamed Chicken Salad with Crunchy Cabbage & Herbs ($55), and the thinly sliced cabbage was attractively crisp, and tasted natural and refreshing. The lean strands of chicken added more substance to the salad, without making it too meaty or heavy.

(2) The Green Papaya Salad with Prawn ($60) was also well received at our table. Moistly dressed in a sweet and sour sauce, the fresh, crunchy green papaya was a fantastic match with the tender prawns. I would have wished for more prawns in this salad, if there weren't so many more dishes to come!

(3) The Crispy Chicken Spring Rolls, Lettuce & Mint ($48), fried to a delightful golden brown colour, was snappy and crunchy, and the mint was a pleasing counterpoint to the chicken.

(4) The Soft Shell Crab Summer Roll ($65) was moreish and satisfying. Wrapped in a thin, smooth rice paper roll, the soft shell crab was fabulously crispy and packed with flavours.

(5) The Grilled Five Spiced Pork Scallion and Crispy Shallot Rice Vermicelli ($55) was my favourite dish. Sliced in an appropriate thickness, the scrumptiously marinated pork scallion had the perfect amount of fat and was a beautiful match with the plain rice vermicelli.

(6) Even without any MSG or other nasty chemicals, the Turmeric White Fish, Scallion and Dill Rice Vermicelli ($58) definitely packed a punch. The white fish flaked delicately, and the distinctive taste of turmeric gave the noodles an extra edge.

(7) The Aromatic Crab & Shrimp Tomato Soup with Vermicelli ($68) left deeply favourable impressions. Unlike the strongly flavoured crab soup at some restaurants which verge on the overwhelming, this crab and shrimp tomato soup was deep and mellow, and the sea-fresh taste of crabs hit all the right notes. The vermicelli was decadently soft and was perfect to soak up the delicious broth.

(8) Needing a break from the noodle extravaganza, we went for the Noodlemi Special Vietnamese Salami Sandwich ($42). The Vietnamese salami was lean and flavourful, but the real gem was found in the baguette, which was almost ethereal, and quickly melted and dissolved in the mouth.

(9) Somewhat defeated by the generous portions at this eatery, we decided to share one Vanilla Terrine with Fresh Berries ($40) amongst the four of us. There was a bit too much syrup on top, but the vanilla terrine had a lovely taste of yoghurt, and the creaminess was skilfully broken up by the crunch of berry seeds.

Spontaneous trip to noodlemi which I've wanted to try for some time. After a refreshing 45-minute walk we arrived, hungry. Sat down to a rather cluttered environment - don't bring big bags coz you'll have nowhere to put it. Mine had to go on the floor. Best to bring something you can put on your lap. Quite cluttered. Has about 22 seats? All tables and stools have been elevated to create the illusion of space - because the resto is quite small. There is a small kitchen at the back from which the oil emanates. So there is no chance you can avoid the oil. We picked a seat with a street view. It's kind of nice when you don't need to always look at your fellow diner when you're talking or, not talking. You fixate your gaze on something immaterial outside the window and mastricate. One, two, three, gulp. Look at a small part of the world pass you by. At the passers-by checking out the menu. At people heading off to Fitness First. At puppies strutting ahead of their owners, pulling on the leash. No arguing couples tonight.

Nice servers but quite inexperienced. Took our orders twice. And my food had coriander in it even though I emphatically emphasized (twice) that I did not want coriander.
Sad. Takes away a lil bit of the joy. We ordered grilled chicken bun (rice vermicelli) and were served beef bun. ._.

Would've redeemed itself by serving high quality food but...

Carrots and bean sprouts(?) and...hey why doesn't the green papaya taste like green papaya? Perhaps I am mistaken as to the flavour of green papaya but the entire bowl just tasted like carrot. The textures were similar too. And there was no sweetness to the dish. Perhaps the green papaya used was too young...? Secondly, it was too spicy for me. And there was coriander which was painstakingly, meticulously discarded. So eating this salad was quite painful for me. There's also a sprinkling of white sesame and deep fried shell-on small shrimp which added to the flavour. Quite nice but the heat was overpowering - it's just me, because I can't stand heat. Apart from the coriander thee is also some lemongrass, which was nice. I liked it there.

Tough skin, short on filling, oozing oil..
but the filing was quite alright. A bit of carrot, mushroom, sprouts. The lettuce and mint were served on the side, which was rather peculiar. Are we expected to wrap the spring roll in the lettuce..? Or do as we did - munch on the large piece of lettuce separately..? Meh.

Not too bad, this. Grilled chicken was succulent and tender marinated with a bit of lemongrass and ginger. Lots of interesting flavours in this bowl. But on the whole this dish was kind of oily. Maybe it's the chicken but no it's not just the chicken, it's the other condiments as well. Like I had no idea why the scallions had to be so oily. And the vermicelli was lukewarm...I'd prefer having them a little colder. Pho is served steaming hot so I expected the bun to be cooler than lukewarm. Kind of weird, like eating a hot vermicelli dish that's been left for a while. Ah well. Chicken saved the day.


Oh and the Saigon beer M got (and shared with me) to help fight the heat in our oral cavities. Proved necessary.

Conclusion:
Give it a shot. Maybe the pho is better. And it's affordable food...so I might come back. But only after I've had a shot at the other Viet restos nearby. Ah, found one just across the street!
题外话/补充资料: Suggestion: (1) install hooks for bags at the underside of tables OR wicker baskets at the base of stools; (2) better ventilation - unpleasant oily smell after dinner; (3) staff training.
