We took a visitor here-- someone who was visiting HK for the first time-- on the basis of all the good reviews. I was rather disappointed in the food, at the end. Here's what we ordered: vegetable dumplings, scallion pastry, green beans, ma po tofu (w/ no meat), catfish in chili broth, soup, and one of the house specials-- beef with fried dough.

First off, I will say that one of the free small appetizer dishes was a kind of Chinese kim chee-- a Sichuan pickled cabbage with chili. I loved it. I'm crazy about kim chee, and this was a new, and very good, pickled cabbage experience.

Vegetable dumplings: very plain, didn't come with any sort of dipping sauce. Nothing special. 5/10

Scallion pastry: This was good. The scallions juicy and fragrant and the pastry itself was firm and flaky. 8/10

Green beans: One of our companions was a vegetarian and this is his favorite Sichuan dish. I liked this version well enough. 7/10

Ma po tofu: We asked for no meat, and were very pleased that they were able to accommodate us. This was my first time having ma po. As I understand, it's supposed to be powerfully spicy, both with chili and Sichuan peppercorns. This was not spicy in either way. It was just bland tofu. 4/10

Catfish in chili broth: You could actually taste the numbing peppercorns in this dish, but they weren't all that powerful. The broth was not spicy at all, though filled with dried red chilis. I ate several of the chilis-- this usually spices things up-- but they weren't in the least bit spicy. No wonder the food has no spice to it! The catfish was pretty bland, considering all the oil it was cooked in. 4/10

The soup w/ noodles that I got was the same broth as the catfish, just with noodles. It suffered from the same defects, except the greasiness was more pronounced (they served it with a spoon, as though you were supposed to eat the very very oily broth it came in. Maybe you are, but I sure wasn't going to.) 3/10

I'll note that some others at the table got dan dan noodles, and they didn't really like them that much.

Finally, there was the beef with fried dough. We didn't really have any idea what to expect-- our Chinese-speaking companion said the Chinese description translated as 'fried noodles' and he thought it was going to be noodles. But instead the "fried dough" was a flattened, crunchy thing-- about the texture of bruschetta toast. The beef it came with was tender and tasty. I'd give this dish an 8 but it was advertised as spicy, but like everything else, was not. 7/10

In sum, the food was on the bland side. Nothing was the least bit spicy, not even the red chilis themselves. There was some numbing pepper, but not as much as I prefer. I don't eat Sichuan a lot, because it's so fatty. But when I do eat it, I expect it to make up in flavor what I gain in calories-from-fat. The food here was just not very flavorful.

Final score: 5/10
