Yunyan has always been my friend's favourite gathering spot since we love spicy food very much and it is conveniently located with comfy setting too after renovation. We can hardly find similar classical Sichuan restaurant anywhere else at such quality in Kowloon side thus Yuanyan is always our first pick for big gathering. Last night we went to Yunyan again in group of 9 after work and they had a hotpot dinner promotion on right started recently .... with the sincere recommendation of the waiter, we decided to give it a try 'coz it was superrrrrrr cold these days anyways. So ... this is our first time having hotpot at our familiar award-winning restaurant.
We've ticked almost half of the hotpot items on the ordering sheet (guess there are almost 50 items in total on the list together with 6 soup base choices) ... to our surprise, the price range is quite reasonable starting from only $18. We've chosen some special ones such as the highlighted 黑毛肚、猪大肠、陈皮牛肉丸、虾球、挂面、home-made dumplings & 锅粑 as they are less common at ordinary hotpot places. All of them are to our satisfaction ... especially the extremly fresh shrimp - tempting!!! Unlike other restaurants, they picked out the shrimp's intestine and shell thus I guess that's why they call it "shrimp balls". 挂面 was also very impressive as it absorbed the essence of the yummy and spicy Sichuan soup!!!! Other than these special items, I must say that other "default items" for hotpot are of high quality - especially the beef and fish slices. Regarding the soup base, we've tried the original Sichuan soup ... just superb flavour. Our "hottest" friends, being an expert in spicy food, simply thumbed up. Even though I can only go with the milder soup base which was with mushroom, red date & 杞子, I can't resist to try the spicy one for a few beef too - pefectly bearable with the soothing Purple Herbal Tea!!
Even though we've ordered over 20 dishes this time, as a fan of Yunyan's dim sum .... I insisited to order their featured dumplings too in spite of the full belly. To wrap up a nice meal, my all-time-favourite milk puddings were ordered too to complete such happy hotpot time!! The final surprise was that if we paid with the CCB credit card, there should be a discount 'coz he mentioned we should make use of the good deal at their restaurant before the bank's offer to be ended in late Feb ... BUT I LEFT MINE AT HOME and no one else got it at our table!!!!! Well ... totally a value-for-money meal anyways without that. Never mind - will make a visit again for hotpot and their other dishes ... so things were simply full of surprises yesterday night - both for wallet and belly.
