We tried the bovine bone with tomato hot pot base and the taiwan style mala hot pot base. You can also get unlimited duck blood and tofu for any soup base as a side dish but you can only add the duck blood and tofu into the soup if it is a spicy one, so the mala soup was perfect with it. We ordered a lot of dishes including: penguin shaped cuttlefish balls, clams, shrimp, us prime rib, 3 different balls (beef, pork and shrimp), 响铃, sanuki udon (chewier than the regular one) and the vegetable platter. We also ordered the lychee shaped fried shrimp balls.
I definitely recommend all the meat balls because they are all so generous in size and very flavorful and tender no matter the soup. The penguin cuttlefish ball is especially soft and adorable as well. I also recommend the lychee shaped dee fried shrimp balls if you like shrimp as there is a very organic and strong taste of shrimp with chunks of shrimp meat as well, all that deliciousness is then coated with rice puffs then fried which makes it very crispy and tastes even better with the tender meat inside.
The shrimp and clam were a bit disappointing as the meat for both were very dry and mushy when cooked, even though the shrimp was still moving and fresh.
The us prime rib was very tender and definitely one of the best hot pot meat I’ve ever had, the marbling on the meat was very impressive and only needed 2-3 seconds in the hot pot to get cooked (but still a bit pink) and it melted deliciously in my mouth due to the fat. The portion was also very generous as each slice was about 13cm long and there was at least 15 slices as well.
The sanuki udon was so chewy and tender which I loved as I like chewy noodles. The cooking time was quite long but definitely worth it as it absorbed all the spicy soup and became the perfect vessel for it.
Now for the star of the day, the duck blood and tofu. The duck blood was so soft and tender but also firm (the same texture as pigs blood but easier to break down) the taste was very spicy due to the soup and sauce itself but still had it’s unique blood taste without the heavy aftertaste of iron, and every-time you ask for a refill, they give you a lot as well! The tofu was very big in size and acted as a very good vessel for the soup, I believe the tofu is smelly tofu (?) so the taste and smell reminded me of taiwan a lot 😆. With the tofu absorbing all the spicy soup, it became very spicy and when you bit into it, the soup would explode and it would be like you are drinking the soup.
Same as the 响铃, it only needs 1-2 second in the soup to become soft (do not leave for even a second longer as it would get soggy and lose it’s texture), I normally don’t eat 响铃 but I had to try it with the soup and I do not regret it 😉. When I bit into the 响铃, the soup just leaked out and poured down my throat, instantly warming my whole body.
The vegetable platter was very overwhelming with a plethora of green leaf vegetables and root vegetables. Do not order if you get full easy or do not have many people with you as it is quite big and we didn’t even finish it all.
This restaurant is also intertwined with the taiwan tea shop next to it which lets you order any tea from there as well with your meal. We ordered the jasmine bubble milk tea and jasmine tea with orange juice. The bubble tea was very milky and flavorful, most like the traditional bubble milk tea but not overly sweet and creamy and the boba was very chewy albeit a bit small. The jasmine tea with orange juice I definitely recommend if you do not like milk teas because it is so refreshing and the perfect counter for the spicy hot pot (if you get the spicy hot pot). The mug they give you in is also ginormous and holds maybe 500ml (?). So definitely worth it 👍 .
Another great thing about this restaurant is they have their own “make-your-own-sauce-station” with dozens of options from chilli oil, doubanjiang, sesame seeds, regular soy sauce, seafood soy sauce, minced garlic, coriander and crushed peanuts. I especially love their mushroom sauce with minced dried mushrooms which definitely came through in every bit of the sauce I dipped it in. They also have some appetizers there with a seasoned fish skin which was very chewy and refreshing and a spicy seaweed salad that was just was refreshing and crunchy. They also provide rice for you to get yourself if you are still hungry or want some rice and small selection of fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe and cherry tomatoes.
We also had a complimentary shot of ice yogurt which was basically calpise but was still delicious 😋, and a plum jelly as dessert which was very soft and contained a real pickled plum in the middle.
Finally, the service was good but could be more responsive and consistent as some times the staff would be at your beck and call but others they would take 10 minutes to notice you. But whenever you need to top up on soup or add more duck blood and tofu, they will be very polite and quick about it. The restaurant itself was also very exotically presented with oriental waterfalls and very dim lighting, but you have to be careful when you are turning corners as you may bump into someone due to the sharpness of the turn and poor lighting.
Overall, definitely recommend if you enjoy spicy foods or just hot pot in general. Perfect way to satisfy spicy/hot pot cravings as well as family or friends celebrations 😄.
