for old timer hong kong foodies, it is getting harder to find good quality HK style western food nowadays. the famous ones like 雄雞, 愛皮西, 紅寶石 are all history.
i think the russian borsch soup is a signature item from which one can judge a HK style western cuisine. very much like picking the hot & sour soup to judge any northern chinese cooking.
to this end, the Queen's Cafe rises to the top. their borsch is thicker than normal, the stock is flavorful, and filled with plenty of cabbage, celery, onion, carrot & herbs. it is served extra hot, so that the last spoonful is till warm.
that was an excellent start for my fixed 3-course dinner for $160. next came the black pepper steak, served with spaghetti, chinese green, carrots & potatoes. the steak was cooked medium rare, so tender that it cut like butter. very tasty with the black pepper sauce on top. usually i had grilled pepper steak that is coated with black peppers, without sauce. but this style with sauce on top is actually much better to complement the moist & juicy meat. bravo!
her baked beef tongue served with spaghetti was also outstanding. the sliced tongue (only the front part with lean meat) was soft & tender, but kind of crunchy too. this is so different from the mushy kind elsewhere. the sauce was yummy too, with mushroom, onion & tomato.
i tend to forgive the heavy doses of butter in the borsch and spaghetti, knowing that it is the devil that makes things taste great! i was also impressed with the generous serving size of the food.
service was average & satisfactory, and not objectionable. the spacious seating is another plus among most other hong kong cafes. the place is also quieter than other cafes, maybe due to the large area and polite customers. i hope this place keeps flourishing, since it has come a long way since 1952!
